I while ago I saw on t.v a piece of art/sculpture called the great vagina wall (I can google it) it consisted of lots of casts of various women's vaginas put together in frames. They were not pornographic or erotic but does show how there is no normal to how a woman looks and that we all look different . The artist was saying he did it to help women who were considering plastic surgery on their genitals maybe see it wasn't needed. It might not be something I would go and see but it was a very powerful image. So when my sil said she was worried about my two dn age 14 and 16 opinions on their body image and peer pressure etc I suggested that the vagina wall might be something useful to show them how diverse everyone is. I was quite shocked by her reaction which was basically saying I should not look at such filth and she would never expose her daughters to such a thing. This has left me feeling really upset. I just wondered what other people think.

YANBU she's obv a bit uptight about things like this.

I think it sounds like a great idea, but it would need to be handled with tact.
At 14 I don't think there would have been anything worse than my mother announcing 'Come on dear we're going to look at a wall of fannies' I'd never be able to look at her again.
However, if we were in the gallery anyway looking at something else, and 'just so happened to stumble across it' it would be more acceptable.
I think your friend (Dsil?) has issues of her own going by her reaction!
Where is this piece of art by the way? wink

Of course it's good. But I have to point out that they are vulvas rather than vaginas wink.

I agree, YANBU, she is a bit uptight and not realistic. After all, most of the preconceived ideas young girls have about their looks are from magazines where the subject is plastic-surgeried or airbrushed into oblivion, vaginas included!
I think the great vagina wall is superb and would certainly allow my teenage dd to see it if it made her realise we are all different and there is no 'normal'.

I don't know if she is uptight or just wants to protect her dds . But I was very surprised by her reaction. Especially as she has not seen the thing I was talking about.

It's educational and not sexy. So Yanbu.

On another note they had a naked man having his testicles examined on This Morning today... so I'm pretty sure if they can do that on prime time tv during what is half term for a lot of children then a great wall of vagina is just fine.

Icantuckmyboobsinmypocket- I don't know where the sculpture is. Going to try and look it up on Internet and see if I can locate it. London maybe? Not sure

I saw this a few years back (if its the same thing Im thinking of) and I thought the same as you!

If I had been taken to see this at that age by my aunt I'd have been massively hmm. It's her call. I doubt many girls are worried what their vaginas look like (are they??) when they're bombarded with self esteem eroding images of every possible kind. At that age I was more worried about my puppy fat and spots. A wall of vaginas would have casued me nothing but squirming embarassment, and tbh I have no desire to see it even now.

Wasn't it in Brighton? Might not be there anymore though. Have a feeling it was in one of the art spaces on the seafront...

fluffyraggies Mon 11-Feb-13 19:47:33

I just googled 'wall of willies' and there is one wink

I agree I wouldn't have been keen on seeing it with my mum or aunt at 16 or 17 though.

here you are.

i think it's a fantastic idea

I think this was on The Sex Education Show, or that similar one about a sexual health clinic for young people.

I once saw a magazine article which was basically 40 pictures of breasts across a double page spread. It actually changed my life when I realised how much variation there was and that mine were just another version of one of those.

But my aunt taking me to see it... I dunno about that. Is it something you can just... stumble over sometime?

Everincreasingirth Mon 11-Feb-13 19:51:27

Yes. I know it's my sil choice what she shows her daughters and I agree about that my dn s may feel a bit awkward if it was shoved in front of them. What I think I was most upset about was how my sil, who I view as an intelligent woman reacted in such a negative way and made me feel as of I was abnormal to have looked at something like that ( have bot seen it in real life anyway though have a good mind to track it down and do just that now)

No.idea vaginas loked so different. Some are really different. I thought mine was flabby.

LittlePickleHead Mon 11-Feb-13 19:52:28

This was still in Brighton in summer 2011 when we were there for a hen do. It was very enlightening!

Loving the line on that link: "It's not vugar, it's vulva!"

thebody Mon 11-Feb-13 19:54:18

I would love to see my dds teen faces if I suggested we go look at vaginal wall sculptures..

Ha ha ha!

Yanbu. Free the flaps. Every flap matters. smile

After having many hang-ups and insecurity issues with my body all throughout my young teenage years like most girls do. I went to Art college at 17 and spent many months drawing live naked models in class. I spent hours looking and studying naked men and women's bodies of all shapes, sizes and ages and soon realised that nothing and everything all looked the same.

I think this is a fabulous idea and anything that promotes self esteem in young women (or of any age really) should be encouraged.

Everincreasingirth Mon 11-Feb-13 19:57:06

Thanks for the link. Yes. That was the sculpture I saw. I think it is actually really interesting. Will try and get sil to see the link but don't think from earlier reaction she will be that keen .

MorrisZapp Mon 11-Feb-13 19:57:09

I dunno. They can look around them and see different body shapes all day long, probably doesn't stop them stressing about their hair, skin, arse etc as most of us do.

Personally the great wall of vagina doesn't appeal much to me, though I'd be happy to take any kid I knew who wanted to see it. If my mum or auntie had suggested it when I was a teenager the eye roll would have been visible from mars.
