AIBU?

To think someone may have been listening to our phone conversation and feel spooked?

Was chatting to my mum on the phone, it sounded like someone had picked up a phone in another room and tried to dial a number, heard it pick up and then numbers being pressed, then it started going beep, pause, beep, I thought DM has accidently pressed a button but she said she hadn't, then you heard a phone being put down. Then a few minutes later it happened again. Both dm and me both only have one phone in the house, I'm on my own and she's on her own with DF who's asleep.

I said I was going and would ring her straight back but when I picked up my phone it was as though there was someone on the line, no dial tone just a beep, pause, beep. After a few minutes the line went free and I rang my mum back, she said her phone had been the same, we chatted for a few more minutes but it kept happening so we went.

What do you think?

mmm, a bit creepy! But, possibly a crossed line? That used to happen quite a lot

I didn't think you could get crossed lines now we have digital exchanges?

I used to love getting a crossed line when I was a kid. I used to sit and nose in on conversations Blush

Obviously some sort of line fault though OP

I remember that happening too years and years ago on a really dodgy first cordless phone, but didn't think it could happen now either?

I really hope noone could hear us we were talking about how we don't agree with the death penalty Blush

As far as I know it's ok to talk about that OP. I expect MI6 have bigger fish to fry Grin

I get this all the time still on Virgin. Heard two old women having a right chinwag the other day so just hung up again quietly. I also constantly get a bloke along for Sheila, he never believes she isn't here Confused

how long was the call? long calls sometimes seem to get checked out in case something is wrong or going on.

do you know anyone dodgy? i accidentally know loads of slightly dodgy people. 'they' started listening to my calls when i was very mildly political in the 1980s. then when i had contacts in areas where stuff was suspected of being planned, plus across the country in various communities, it started happening again. i think they've decided i'm harmless now. they've only done it once in the last year.

I had a crossed line two years ago. So it does still happen. Caused problems with our broadband too.

We regularly talk for up to an hour, who checks long calls? What for?!

No I don't know anyone that dodgy

Is your mum Teresa May? Are you Teresa May?

Otherwise I think you'll be ok and you should let your phone company know. You may get a nice Telephone Man.

I'm never speaking about anything private on the phone again, maybe it's my next door neighbour, she has been pretty quiet with my lately.

Is your mum a spy? Grin Grin

Maybe it's because you kept mentioning the word 'death'?

Did you mention 'murder' too?

They're on to you, you know! Shock

If I was listening into a phone call about the death penalty

I wouldn't be able to resist saying, "Hold on ladies while I hang up" Grin

Mrsbunny - how do you know thy have listened?

Report

Crossed lines can be caused by wet wires so if you've had snow, flooding or a lot or rain that is the cause. Once the lines dry out it won't happen

sparklyjumper · 05/02/2013 20:48

I didn't ring her up to talk about the death penalty btw, I was telling her I'd stayed up late watching a film which went onto the conversation about a programme she's been watching, which then went on to the death penalty.

If it was MI5 I really don't think they'd be that crap.

I'm with redlac and I think it's your soggy neighbour. Ask your phone company to check.

Got my hat ready just in case.

It's bad when you can't even gossip about your neighbours anymore without worrying that they might here you, right? Grin

You want the death penalty for your neighbour? That's harsh.

Report
Beaverfeaver · 05/02/2013 21:44

I have had it happen only a few weeks ago.
I could hear someone's conversation and they could hear me.

Freaked me out, so I was polite and hung up completely
