... to be tired of the Goady Fuckers?(371 Posts)
Is it just me or has there been an increase in goady thread derailing in the last couple of weeks? It seems even the most innocuous of threads are being deliberately diverted by posters who only post offensive or ridiculous comments then refuse to back down.
Here's what I use MN for:
Activism and feminism
Not to have arguments with Goady Fuckers who are sitting at home delighted to have got us all off topic.
A lot of threads I've been on in the past few days have been taken completely off topic or detailed. Have we been invaded MNHQ or is it the work of a couple of
Who wants to join me in an Anti Goady Fucker Campaign?
I vote that when someone tries to derail a thread that we all ignore and do a mass report to MNHQ. They are fed up hearing from me in the past weeks.
And you better believe this is a thread about a thread
So shoot me
I generally ignore people who are trying to get a rise by being controversial and sometimes report them if they are offensive or if I think they're a bridge-dweller.
The best thing is just not to engage with them at all, then they have nothing further to respond to.
Yy adding thread dredging
I try to ignore and report but it doesn't work when others react to the provocation.
I've reported a few over the past weeks - but sometimes I just CBA
I sometimes cant help reacting then i give myself a kick and ignore, I guess folk are just bored in their own lives or 'something'
I kind of agree with you Madame!
Now what about the state of things?
I do get a little bit jaded with peeps who just want to prove a point (their point) and hammer it home, in a thread when someone is coming on for a bit of advice and support...
It can be a bit like a rampage of the galloping hobby horses sometimes, and the OP is run over.
Have a cuppa
Thanks for the cuppa.
Yes, that's it. I've even seen it on support threads recently. ' I am right and will continue to state my opinion even if it doesn't help the OP at all'
I do agree with you that there are people like this. But I wouldn't like an anti-goady-fucker initiative because I also think that often people are charactierised as "goaders" simply for having a view that goes against the grain for a lot of posters. In so many different areas of the internet, MN not least, there is pressure to police the reasonable expression of opinion and come down on controversial views.
It is difficult to know how to react, because of course there are plenty of truly unacceptable, abusive, etc things being said that do need to be cracked down on -- and unacceptable suppression of opinion comes in on the tailcoat of necessary suppression.
It's shocking, really, that we needed Keir Starmer to come out and issue guidelines preventing the legal suppression of certain categories of offensive talk. I think that we all need to develop our own inner Keir Starmers (and MNHQ needs a KeirStarmer app) to restrain ourselves from orthodoxy-imposition.
I hate the word "goader" in fact because I think it represents a kind of mission creep of troll policing into a more oppressive kind of policing of conversation.
Can we add goaders who start a thread, repeatedly, on the same issues, over and over, just to get the same outraged reaction to their inflammatory nonsense? Recurrent yo-yo goaders really grate my carrot <nicked that from another fred>
I think that Goady Fuckers are a separate category from the kind of thing you are talking about.
There are people who will defend their opinion to the death, despite the rest of MN telling them YABU - that's their decision.
What I'm talking about is posters who divert the conversation by being controversial for the sake of it. They enjoy causing a ruckus, the 'opinion' is simply a means to an end.
Yes, good point Bunch.
Carrot grating is a good one
Some people are goady and some are just plain nasty fuckers. Tough to tell the difference sometimes. Then you've got the hysterical fuckers who you can almost see winding themselves up into a frenzy as they berate the OP from the safety of their own home. Then you've got the it's AIBU so I can be an absolute cunt fuckers.
YANBU but there are an awful lot of fuckers out there at the moment.
Mme, those people are either trolls ( in which case ban and delete) or they are non-trolls with an annoying posting style -- in which case we should put up with them. They themselves might see the regular posting of views that they hate as equally disruptive and infuriating.
Ban trolls, tolerate everyone else. The mission creep is what is scary.
I post on MN much too much and I don't find that "goaders" are a big problem at all. All the discussions I'm on seem to ramble along pretty well. I feel a bit puzzled about those who see a huge amount of disruption and I wonder if, at root, they often just don't like seeing views they profoundly disagree with . (Not saying that is the case with you, Mme, I'm just really quite anxious about this massive trend towards intolerance of some forms expression across the internet)
It's difficult to do that without making this a thread about a thread in a way that would get me into trouble
Ok. Say I post
'DD really wants to learn to ride, but I'm scared of horses and don't know how to teach her'
First few posts are about finding a good riding school with links to articles about this. Maybe some advice on overcoming fear of horses.
Then GF comes along
'Why teach her to ride? It is a cruel and inhumane sport. Haven't you seem what happens at Grand national? What kind of mother are you?'
That kind of post on a thread of horsey people giving advice is not going to be ignored. Huge argument ensues with GF popping back every so often to fan the flames.
When you search the GF's posts on other threads, you see this is normal posting behaviour and that they do it on all manner of topics.
It's not contributing to the site, it is not debate.
And the poor OP still doesn't know what to do with her horse mad daughter.
I've noticed a small amount of posters who find it appropriate to post horrible things to the op in bereavement and relationships these last couple of days. I really don't know what they get from it.
I think being a goady fucker is generally a sign of a long term, really putting the effort in troll.
Nowt HQ could do about them until they crossed the line, which I imagine is difficult if you're keeping the righteous indignation up to an appropriate level.
Me too SPBindisguise it's vile. They do get deleted though.
