Situation 1 - I sold a photo frame on ebay, wrapped it carefully in bubble wrap, lots of layers of packing tape etc but the glass was still broken in the post but frame in perfect condition. Lady asked me for a refund, I gave her back 50p (as the item was only £1) even though I took every care I could and it was the post office that broke it.
Situation 2 - I bought a fancy dress costume listed as age 2-3, it comes and its 1-2 so doesn't fit. Cost me £12. I'm going to ask for my money back as I have to buy another one now (she can have the costume back to relist)
DP says these are the same and not to ask for a refund as I was annoyed when the lady who bought the photo frame asked me for 50p off, because it seemed petty so I shouldn't ask the costume seller for one.
These situations are not the same are they? The costume was listed wrong and as a result I have a costume that doesn't fit! AIBU?
No they are not the same. 1 was damaged in the post, nobody's fault (except shitty Royal Mail), 2 is not as described and you have every right to ask for a refund.
Thankyou! DP has really annoyed me. Making out that I am petty to ask for £12 back on a costume we cant use. She could still use the bloody frame and she had money off!

YANBU, it's not the same. The frame was sold as described, it was damaged in transit not damaged in the first place. The costume was wrongly described - the size didn't change in transit! I would ask the seller for a refund if it was me
of course it's not the same, 50p ain't £12 plus they sent you the wrong size, you MUST ask for a refund and return the other item to them, simple!
Well I would say they were both the same, but in the sense that both should have been fully refunded IMO. No, it wasn't your fault that the frame arrived damaged but as the seller it's your responsibility to ensure it arrives with the buyer safely so you should have refunded. You could then have claimed from Royal Mail. You were lucky the seller didn't go via PayPal or you would have lost the other 50p too ;)
I am not going to reclaim £1 from the post office because that is the most face numbingly boring thing I can imagine doing. I did my best to package the frame well and she got a very good deal on it, even before her 50p off.
Also, I didnt fib on my listing. This person did. That's a willful deceit. I realise in terms of seller's responsibility they are the same. But morally they are not.
And dont worry I count myself lucky everyday that she didn't take me to the cleaners for that 50p.
No it's not the same. One was accidental and out of your hands, the other was easily avoidable, and the sellers mistake.
Am really surprised that you didn't refund £1. That's v petty. As a buyer, I would be livid. It's not about getting a good deal. You entered a contract of sale and didn't deliver. What good is a frame to buyer? They would win if they complained. I would give negative feedback for that.
Your case is clearly different, only similar in that you are being treated as shoddily as you treated someone else.
I agree with bamboostalks. I've just bought something online (not ebay) made of glass which could easily be broken. If it turns up broken there is no way in hell I would accept 50 percent off it! It would be sent back for a replacement or full refund. You should have offered the choice of recorded delivery so you could claim the money back -yes it's only 1 pound and you cant be bothered..but thats your problem, not hers.
As for the costume, yes you should return it as was listed inaccurately.
Wow some people get really het up over 50 pennies. I did refund her 50%. Which was 50p. If we are going to be petty, a frame is very good on its own actually. You can put any glass in to a silver frame, some people dont put glass in anyway, and I only listed a photo frame and not a photo frame with glass so my listing wasn't wrong, I stated I was sending it 2nd class and did, in good time with great care taken to try and prevent damage.
I would have swallowed the loss if that happened to me because I could see the damage wasnt the seller's fault and I'd know that the seller would lose out because there was no way any sane person would make a £1 claim to royal mail. But £12 on an item that isnt what it says it is, is not the same.
I did offer recorded delivery. She choose 2nd class.
Er essentially it is your fault because if you had wrapped it more carefully, it would have been intact. Your rationale is bizarre.
Id be pretty pissed off that you only refunfed me 50p. Where is she/he gonna buy glass from? Thats gonna cost them more than 50p surely?
YABU not to have refunded the full £1 to the woman who bought your photo frame. You keep saying how it's such a small amount of money it's not worth bothering with, so why didn't you just refund it?
YANBU to expect your money back for the costume. It wasn't the size they said it was, which is entirely their fault and not on at all. Was the seller a business who had several different sizes available and sent you the wrong one, do you think?
I wouldn'dt ask for a refund on a £1 item for the reason the OP has said. Going to RM would be so much effort for such a small amount and its not like glass isn't replaceable. The seller would prob just pay out and never reclaim it back, meaning they gave something away for free when it wasn't there fault it was damaged. RM often break or lose things no matter how well you pack it.
I think YANBU. If the buyer was really bothered about the postage of the frame, they should have paid for insured postage. (is there such a thing in UK - although it probably is in no relation to the pound cost of the item)
if things are paid via paypal they are automatically insured? I dont live in Uk but Germany and am a keen ebayer. So if you are ever bothered about getting an item and making sure it gets to someone in one piece we use hermes parcel service as opposed to deutsche post (royal mail equiv) as the items are then insured upto 50 euros i think.
so in my opinion if you packaged as well as you could and it broke, it aint really your fault. but still giving 50% back was ok.....
did you ask for a photo of the broken item. I know there are a lot of nasty people out there too so maybe they were trying to pull your leg to get the money back. having said that we are talking about ONE POUND here. hardly gonna brake the bank to refund it....
Agree with the others regarding the costume. the seller must really take it back and refund (even paying for return postage IMO) as they listed it wrongly.
and....please dont think im being petty about asking for a photo of a broken item. It happened to me once - I bought some "expensive" glasses off an online supplier and 4 of 12 were broken so i emailed them a pic of the broken glasses in the parcel - and got new ones.
If they had been a pound then i would have said tough luck, but 30 quid is a different story....
You were being extremely petty to only refund 50p.
YWBU not to refund, I don't agree with your reasoning at all and the poster who suggested the buyer didn't care that much whether the item arrived in one piece is frankly crackers if you ask me. How much hassle would it be to get replacement glass in the right size? Who could be bothered for the sake of such a cheap picture frame? "I didn't say in the listing that it came with glass" WTAF are you on?
Your own purchase is the same - you should return for a full refund due to the seller's error.

You lost any sympathy you may have had when you tied to justify not refunding 50p.
I could have sent that picture frame ensuring the glass did not break unless a postie stomped deliberately on the package (or worse). I think it's your fault for not ensuring adequate packaging and you should have fully refunded. Broken glass is nasty to deal with.
The dress: if the tag on dress says age 1-2 and no measurements were given in the listing, then you deserve a full refund. It sounds like seller made an honest mistake, not a deliberate deception on sizing (why would anyone?), but that's not your fault. You have every right to ask for full refund.
