He has wired his coat with heated wires, and will connect it to his motorbike.

It is madness, right?

Is he an electrician or a madman?

Why didn't he just buy a proper, safety checked, guaranteed heated coat and/or gloves from a reputable manufacturer? Confused

YADNBU! Ye gods, that sounds terrifying. He's a loon.

It's madness when you can buy a vest that will same thing that's been safety tested already. A friend uses one of these for scuba diving. It would probably work for motor biking, if one doesn't already exist specifically for that, which it probably does.

He is crazy.

There are definitely ones that already exist, DH has looked at one. I would be terrified at the idea of him riding in a homemade one!

you can buy these coats (probably £££) already. perfectly safe.
reminds me of the time when a friend used a heated blanket as bum warmer in the car, the scar took ages to heal, arsehole took on a proper meaning

Sounds like a plotline from 'Casualty'.
If it was my DH I would be getting rid of it ASAP.

Brilliant idea, I hope he develops it, everything has to be invented by someone,

I got hypothermia on a motor bike once, so I think it great.

Dh is crazy. He has no concept of safety. He injures himself a lot.

He does have life insurance though.

Seriously, you can buy them from Lidl half the time, he's mental. It will burn through and ruin the coat, does he realise this? Is he likely to desist if he knows it will wreck his stuff?

SquinkiesRule · 26/01/2013 22:22

OMG he has a death wish.
I had no idea they actually make this stuff for sale.

Yes, you can buy all sorts of heated clothing for use on a motorbike. I also know a lot of people who have DIY versions and they haven't combusted.

I assume he hasn't just stuck bare wire into his jacket and wired it up to the battery.

If he's done it properly it would be no different from a commercially manufactured one.

Have you got a picture?

It may void his vehicle insurance as he's making an undisclosed modification to the motorbike....

Report

He's not making modifications to his bike. Heated vests/jackets/gloves either run on a battery pack or they are plugged into a socket.
