To think detective TV shows are far better when you Don't know who the murderer is

Columbo is spoiled as you know who the murderer is. Far better when you don't know and you have to work it out too.

Completely agree, waste of time knowing at the start.

YANBU

But my DH is a fucking super sleuth and always guesses early doors Hmm

I hate Columbo. He infuriates me with that irritating, bumbling facade almost as much as he does the murderer.

The beauty of Columbo is in watching him solve the crime and hook the murderer, all with a smile and without a firearm. With the quality guest stars as a bonus. Half the time with other TV shows it's bleeding obvious who did it anyway!

I love Columbo because I have a habit of falling asleep and missing the end of programmes.

I thought I was the only person in the whole world who thinks that Colombo is spoiled because you know who the killer is from the off.
Good point Though, Missy. Don't think I've ever made it through an entire episode of Midsomee Murders so I never know who's the killer.

I was forced to sit through Midsomer Murders a while ago - have you noticed (if you're daft enough to watch it) that they play it from Bergerac's point of view for 2/3 of the plot and then suddenly show who did it so that the rest is even more spoiled than it would've been anyway.

I totally agree! Columbo is a waste of my super sleuthing skills Grin

I like to put my leetle grey cells to work when watching murder mysteries.

With the majority of detective shows it tends to be the biggest name that does the murder. I suppose they have to give the biggest part to the highest paid actor. You can't imagine that they would contact Tom Cruise (for example) to play "Gawping bystander number two" in Midsomer Murders Grin

Doesn't stop me watching them all though.

You are all bitches Grin
I love Columbo, behind the dirty mac, and the bumbling way, he has a mind of steel!
Peter Falk was my first crush, so i'm biased Blush
I love how he gets under their skin, and then nails them!

yabvu Columbo is brilliant. The sleuthing skills should be in overdrive - it's not a whodunnit, so much as a howareyougonnaproveit

loofet · 20/01/2013 23:16

Yanbu but i'm a bit of a smart arse when it comes to guessing who dunnit, mostly the Agatha Christie ones. Still enjoy it though even though I know from early doors Wink

One of Wilf's autism obsessions is MM's. He has almost all the episodes on either video or dvd. He has an annoying habit of telling me two minutes into a two hour episode who the killer is!!!! Hmm

Why don't you just not watch the first 3 mins of Columbo then?

I like working out who did it before the TV detective does.

chipsandpeas · 21/01/2013 07:11

i love trying to work it out as well but love columbo as others have said watching him work it out and let the killer think they have got off until the final moments were great tv

Hate Columbo.
Love Agatha Christies and Midsomers.

I'm liking the new Father Browns too.

I like traditional murder mysteries with no stupid computer-related forensics. Gah!

I used to hate Columbo when I was younger but now I quite enjoy watching how he gets his man. But I much prefer an Agatha Christie or Murder, She Wrote. Although the ITV Miss Marple is a piece of crap compared to the BBC version in the 80s and early 90s with Joan Hickson. Am much looking forward to the last ever Poirots with David Suchet (currently being filmed).

CheCazzo · 21/01/2013 08:37

Agree Voice - there is no Miss Marple but Joan Hickson. Unreplaceable! The only good thing about the new ones is the cast list which is always interesting.

I posted on the Miss Marple TV thread last night. I met JH when the BBC filmed The Moving Finger at my parents house in the 80's! She was a wonderful lady!

I'm enjoying the Father Brown episodes but must admit that I half expect Mark Williams to turn to the camera and say "This week, I 'ave mostly been wearin' a cassock" Grin

YABU if you think the only enjoyment is in trying to figure out whodunnit.

If that is the only thing that is enjoyable then it's not a very well-written story.

Trills · 21/01/2013 10:26

Narrowed it down to the guy I recognise is the name for "it must be him because he's Tom Cruise"

Report
MrsBethel · 21/01/2013 10:59

Nah, Columbo's the best. Half of the time it'd never hold up in court, though.
