AIBU?

To wonder why corned beef is so expensive?

I saw a documentary years ago about how it was made. Any old bit of shite from a cow, all mashed up in a mashing thing, then shaped into er....whatever shape.

Don't get it. Mashing and shaping is not that ££££.

I was surprised when I went to get some for a 'cheap' meal with cheesy jacket potatoes and beans - £2.50ish for just a Tesco version, small can.

It is expensive isn't it. I thought it was supposed to be a cheap meal ingredient too but never buy it any more.

It's normally cheaper by weight in a tin TBH - 3 slices in tesco is about £1.50!

It's gone up maaa-hoosively in price in the last year. I don't bother anymore, might as well get a bit of mince.

spose if you are buying it for a dinner then the tin works out cheaper, as i said i only buy a few slices and have it on white bread with hp sauce Blush

Has the fact it's usually from Argentina got anything to do with it?

Spam is a ridiculous price for what it is too! DP likes corned beef/spam/those little jars of meaty sandwich spread. They all make me want to vomit!

Mind you...isn't corned beef made in Argentina (the branded one anyway, I think might be). So maybe the Argentinians are expressing their Falkland discontent by upping the price of corned beef Grin

4 slices £1 in morrisons last week.

Oh. Doesn't work. Well if you search corned beef on there it shows you.

4 slices £2.15, which is over £1 per 100g. The tins are 79pish per 100g. Hugely expensive. I suppose if it's imported that will be why.

I love it, but the name makes me feel sick - reminds me of corns on feet!

Report
mrsjay · 19/01/2013 10:31

I think it is pork and 'stuff' and no sign of a cow at all

A fiver each way.

Binkyridesagain · 19/01/2013 10:35

Punk, onions and brown sauce then you dip the butty in Heinz ( no other brand will do) tomato soup. Mmmmm

Maybe it's to cover the cost of all the can opening injuries. I love a bit of corned beef - one of those childhood comfort foods- but I can't get into the bastard tins without looking like I've tried to put the cat in a dress!

If dp isn't around, no corned beef for knickers Sad

He's lucky really, he's not got much on the 'pro' list, that could be the deal breaker Grin

Doh! Missed the joke! I blame the nagging teenager for making me chomp at the bit.

It took me a long time to understand what 'no corned beef for knickers' meant there!

I LOVE corned beef!
