men have incontinence right? there are male incontinence products? why are all the ads of women getting into embarassing knicker flashy situations? why no men?

Because men don't wear knickers.

I wouldn't say that you are unreasonable to want to see clumsy, blushing men in knickers, but I do not share that desire with you.

A more serious answer:

While I'm sure there are incontinent men, it's actually quite common in women of a certain age/who have had children.

I'd say a fair percentage of us here on mumsnet may pee when they sneeze or don't handle star jumps as well as they used to.

Now, go do your kegels.

"Because men don't wear knickers"
"andthey dont wear skirts "

some do.

i dont care what they wear. i'm just dont get why it's just women used in the ads.

same reason it's women with dry skin/sensitive teeth/constipation/the squits/a headache

it's cos it's tapping into the carefully manufactured insecurities as a marketing tool

The ones that do, normally look like this. They want to attract customers, not deter them. Male incontinence products sell fine without advertising.

how can the discerning shopper appreciate the product's efficacy without a totally gratuitous knicker flash shot

this would be demeaning for men since they are generally expected to be clothed and are not there to provide amusement by virtue of their clothing, bodies or a combo of both. that kind of shit is dehumanising and far better suited to women

Because it's a problem that affects more women than men at a younger age due to childbirth? Maybe that's why they don't use men in the adverts?

do female incontinence products have trouble selling without advertising? i'd be very surprised if they had more need to advertise than male stuff.

i like your explanation chilbi. i couldn't imagine it would go down to well with their target market having a man stumbling and getting his trousers caught in a car door and flashing his boxers. people would quite rightly say "there really is no need to show his boxers in order to sell this stuff" but fine for women Hmm

not at all, Booyhoo, but i bet they sell far more than is medically required

I wish my Y6 boys would keep their bums in their trousers. But no, they think flashing their knickers is cool.

YANBU to wish that adverts did not try to be funny in this manner.

YAB a bit U to think that incontinence pads should advertise using men.

dont men use incontinence pads? what do they use?

From personal experience (ill dad) men do have incontinence pads, but I've never ever seen branded ones. The big Boots in our city has About 2 packs of each size of mens disposable nappy type underwear and about 4 packs of incontinence pads. For women, there are shelves filled with pads and disposable underwear. Judging by that, one can assume men don't usually have bad incontinence problems like women do.

If babies have different nappies for boys and girls because they pee in different places then presumably men with incontinence should have their own solution?

babies have different nappies? Shock i have never heard of this!

would also like to point out that i mentioned incontinence products in my OP. i didn't specify pads. Wink

I don't think penises leak as much as vaginas do.

Sorry

Babies used to have different nappies back in the 80's. Confused

Wee doesn't come out of vaginas.

Incontinence pads are not for vagina-secretions.

They don't have different nappies anymore. Last time I saw boy/girl nappies was 1997 when ds was born.

fake i'd say that's more to do with what damemargo was talking about. women are more likely to buy and shop around, try out different products. men more likely to pick the first product they see that appiles to their condition and stick with it. i am aware this is generalising. but i'd say marketing plays much more of a factor in what's on the shelves than demand. plus women wear lots of different styles of knickers so need different shapes of pads. liek the endless styles of sanitary towels.

incontinence in women is often portrayed as an embarrassing fact of life, the stereotypical and derogatory image of the older woman smelling of urine as the brunt of many jokes

incontinence in men is seen as a medical problem and therefore Not Funny

It pisses me off, because there is a perfectly good, low risk operation called a TVT you can have on the NHS, rather than those products, yet they market them like there is nothing else. I had the op last January and hardly a drop has passed my lips since IYSWIM . I would recommend it anyway.
