AIBU?

To put together a post apocalyptic survival bag...

...and keep it under my bed? I'm thinking tinned rations, water, high calorie treats, basic drugs (ie aspirin, antibiotics), some sort of pocket knife, warm clothes, a towel, a torch, some sort of basic gps maybe...hmm what else?

Basically so I could grab the kids, grab the bag and run for our lives to the nearest forest at a split seconds notice.

Um. It depends on what, exactly, you think is going to happen. In my anxious times (is that something you have trouble with?), I've thought about various scenarios and recently concluded that if civilisation broke down I'd prefer us to die than have some drawn-out, miserable survival.

If you're serious, you'll need to be armed, to protect yourself against your desperate neighbours who will be bigger and stronger than you.

What if the forest was hit by a solar flare? Nuclear fall out? Attack of the killer zombies?

BTW you forgot a tent!

My worst nightmare is a loss of civilisation- would rather everyone were taken together in the apocalyptic event. My kit would consist of guns, guns, and more guns.

Yabu to not have a ofrs packed already.

Ive got one!

My plan is to stay in the city and move into waitrose. I am not being facetious that genuinely is my plan.

I reckon all you losers would flee to the forests and I would have the wine-deli aisle all to myself Wink

Serious footwear, and plastic to keep everything dry. If your feet get blistered and infected, you're fucked. The SAS Survival Handbook (or title something like that) tells you how to build a shelter and skin rabbits and stuff like that.

(Or if it's a lighthearted question, take that guy Ray Mears who can feed you all on berries and tree scrapings.)

What kind of apocalypse would make you run to the forest with the kids in tow?

I think I'd be safe in a zombie apocalypse now as we've got a new hidden en suite in the bedroom behind sliding mirror doors. Zombies would never work it out!!

I might stash some goodies behind the loo

That's not going to last you long in an apocalypse!

For more mundane things like a housefire, I'd do a bag with all important documents, or at least copies, and valuables

For the apocalypse, you're going to have to think a bit bigger I'm afraid.

DH and I under the influence of wine came up with the idea for a metal saucepan that doubles as a helmet, with a 'nest of helmets' for families, which would fit together to fit neatly into your ORFS. Theys be useful for zombie attack, massive hailstones, or meteorite debris.

I agree with flowerydrawers. I'm not knocking your plan but you are going to have to have lots more than that. Personally I feel when my number is up, it's up. Give me the hearafter any day, an existence like the hunger games sounds dreadfully grim.

I don't think your gps would work in the post-apocalypse either

YANBU.

DH laughs at me when I say I want to do this.

However I think we're all dead and gone if it's a zombie apocalypse - where on earth would I find a weapon?! Grin

In an Actual Apocalypse, you'd need the means and a plan to survive for ever, not just a few days/weeks. You'd need to know how to live a sustainable life, not just survive on the dwindling pickings of our current civilisation.

I do plan to make an OFRS, but it's to do with being snowed in, or having to leave the house because of flooding. If there's an apocalypse I'm toast, and probably quite glad of it.

Shit a tent!! How did I forget that?

Yes have definitely been watching too many zombie/alien/endoftheworld/risingofape type films. BUT as my mother would say 'Fail to prepare and prepare to fail!'

I had a dream about flying zombies the other night in which case we are fucked! Grin

When the time comes, I'm heading straight to B&M bargains. The amount of food in tins in that place should be enough to keep me going until I've restored civilisation and become leader of the new world.

Jammy the "nest of helmets" is GENIUS. I, however, will settle myself in morrisons waitrose for the duration of the zombie apocalypse - plenty of room for kids to run around and lots of wine healthy snacks to keep us going!
