Got laminate when it was first fashionable because I believed the BS about it being easier to care for, more practical blah blah. In reality it is cold, hard, needs sweeping AND mopping several times a day, and looks really unwelcoming. Also, it is not nice for crawling babies.

I finally decided to get a carpet with some money I had saved up. Negotiated a brilliant deal and got it fitted today. I love it. I keep looking at it and at the whole room with it in, and the gold rod between the lounge and the dining room, that is still laminated, makes me smile!

H said "OK, dont go on, its just a carpet!"

AIBU?

My new phrase is

I would never ever ask guests to remove their shoes, but I would swear and moan about them if they bring muck in!

YANBU. I love getting new things for house almost as much as I enjoy buying clothes.

It's new,you saved for it,it's special.

I do love laminate floors though. That's mostly to do with my hideous (they're beautiful and lovely really) cats who completely infested my flat with fleas in the middle of last year. Fleas never fucking die if you have carpets. I detest them.

YANBU. We got new hall carpet in October as my pre children idiotic choice cream carpet was more of a mucky brown and shamed me. Got a cheap roll end of a more sensible colour and I still look at it daily and love it a little more.

Long may your new carpet joy last huzzah!

There is nothing more lovely than having something new in the house especially carpet Grin.

There's that smell too and the need to hoover to get the excess fluff up.

I need new carpet!Grin

My parents made the mistake of having carpet when myself and two brothers were little. Both times we destroyed it Blush. Tracking dirt in, spilling things etc. Hopefully your carpets stay nice and new, just don't let the kids anywhere near it Wink

We have dark solid wood flooring with lots of rugs which I love but it can show the dust. We had laminate in our old rented flat and it is awful. Especially as they obviously picked the cheapest stuff they could find Hmm

OOh I'm with you on this.

We're halfway through doing up our 30s semi and my DH was insistent he wanted real wood floors, which I know are practical but are cold and unwelcoming.

When I realised he wanted to rip the original skirting in order to get the best finish on said wooden floors, I put my foot down and we've met halfway on sisal carpet.

I cannot wait. The carpet in here is 30 years old and is filthy. It pains me to look at it!

Real wood floors are warm and welcoming and nothing like laminate mum!

OP when we got married we asked for money towards carpeting our flat instead of presents - people kept asking for a present list and we didn't need anything - people were SO generous we got the whole flat done. I still remember the lovely smell of new carpet when I came home from work and saw it looking all lovely for the first time Grin

Oh but new carpets ARE wonderful. Can't beat walking into a room (whilst is still empty) and admiring how wonder it looks. We have a new carpet put in the lounge a while back and I still love how good it looks.

Equally, there is nothing worse than the first time there is a spillage on beautiful new carpet!Wink I think our record for stains was probably three weeks.

If the floor needed sweeping and mopping several times per day, then all this dirt will now just stay in the carpet, wont' it?

(not a single carpeted room in my house. Underfloor heating though).

I can't wait to sort out the carpeting here...

The damp problem needs to be resolved first though.

I hate laminate too, always looks cold and cheap.

In our American home we had painted floorboards, that looked crap too! Grin

YANBU ...I guess you had to ask that as carpet still gets such a bad press!

Can I ask what you paid? we are doing the whole house in stages, I'm thinking it will be a fortune...
