to hate and loathe speed bumps

i ran over one earlier and somethine clanked on my car, i hate and loathe them, they ruin cars and no i do not speed over them but just the normal driving over them ten times a day ruins springs and other parts costing loads of money.

I would prefer a speed camera, in fact speed cameras up the whole of the roads with bumps. i do not speed in my car but the bumps are starting to really irk me now.

i expect people will say iabu but i don't think i am, i just think there are other and better ways to slow vehicles. chicanes to slow flow etc. placing massive humps in the middle of the road isn't the way we should be heading [grr]

They are a nightmare if you have a particularly low to the ground car. There is no speed slow enough. Particularly the new style ones which have a sharp incline and then a flat top.

YANBU. They are so damaging to cars and they also damage houses.

There are so many other options but councils choose bumps because they are cheap and do slow people down.

I much prefer the ones where you give priority to one side or the other.

Hate the bastards with a vengence. There is no speed slow enough for me to get my Smart Roadster over many in our nearest town, therefore there are whole no-go areas for me.

YANBU. I've had to replace all the springs on my car recently, because I live in an area with them - they wore out very fast. Even if you slow down to first great, you can't help doing some damage. And it doesn't seem to slow down the racers around here - they just bounce over them the same as always.

The best way to slow people down is by making them understand why speeding is dangerous, but that is time-consuming and expensive, unfortunately.

YANBU they are a nuisance. Hate them with a passion. Every time I go over one, even at 5mph it sends a jolt of pain through my back. And they don't slow the bad drivers down!

YADNBU - I have to go over 38 of the bastards every day when I do the school run and go to work. Even my mechanic commented on the number of people now needing replacement springs is down to the sheer amount of them on the roads around here.

Yanbu. Around the corner from my house I have 2 really lovely smooth bumps that were made last year. I love the feeling of my tyres going over them because they're so smooth. After those bumps come 3 shitty hard bumps that ruined my car's suspension so now I have to go over them really slowly and even then I here something scrape under the car.

I especially hate the small plasticy thin ones you get in carparks. Death to speed bumps.

I drive a big, gas guzzling, and very fast Cadillac. Because of its wide track, I don't touch the cushion type speed bumps at all. I could drive flat out if I wanted to. (I don't!)

My dad has a Smart - just the sort of thing we should be encouraged to drive in towns. Because it is narrow and short wheel based, hitting a speed bump nearly destroys your spine. Because it is so unpleasant, you find yourself not looking out for other road users as you should, because you are more concerned with the flipping bumps.

Where is the sense in this?

The cushion type bumps also mean that people will drive down the centre of the road to avoid them. Even if there is oncoming traffic.

I drive a low slung car......and live on a housing estate with great big bastard ones - the flat topped version with the sheer inclines either side. I cannot get over them without scraping along the top. Even if I physically stop my car and just creep it over......sssscccrrraaaappppeeeee. Mighty annoying.

Not as annoying as the twats that live down the road that think its acceptable to drive on the pavement to avoid the afore mentioned speed bump. Yes, it was me that reported you to the police you idiot, the pavement is for people!

Seriously, my DD knows to stay either in the drive or on the pavement......you don't really expect to see a VW heading towards her on the fricking pavement, do you? He deserved the very stern talking to that he got from a road traffic officer

i hate them too. where i live in London they are pretty much along every residential road. Some are huge and it's impossible to drive over them without the back of your vehicle scraping the road.

A few years ago I had a long conversation with a senior policeman in Swindon.

He said there was a particular not-well-off area where speed bumps were put in to deter boy racers, but now the police didn't like to go there because it wrecked their cars .....

And it didn't slow down the mopeds at all !

My car is very low and was damaged by speed bumps. I think cameras would be better.

You aren't alone. We live in Malaysia. It has the worst roads I've ever come across. Great big holes and missing road surface all over the place.
Our road was bump free. Unfortunately, someone decided that a new, unpainted one that is at least 75cm tall was a good thing.
Several cars were damaged. Fortunately I saw them laying/building it so mine wasn't one.
There doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason to their placement either. I do understand outside schools and mosques. I don't understand a long straight piece of road.
