Watching toy story 3 and there's a graduation photo of andy, his mum and sister.

Thinking about it I've only just notices that it is a single parent family.

Portrays single mums in a good light.

Dad might have died

Another good reason to love Toy Story grin

I haven't seen them all, nice to have it pointed out that it is a good slant on a lone parent.

MrsJREwing Wed 26-Dec-12 16:02:53

Why do you think Dad died?

BlackholesAndRevelations Wed 26-Dec-12 16:03:15

If dad died that still makes a single parent! It's good to normalise it (ie if I'm right, no explicit reference)

nannynick Wed 26-Dec-12 16:03:57

Think she was single in the first Toy Story as well. They were moving house so maybe due to getting divorced.

whatalwayshappenlife Wed 26-Dec-12 16:05:51

I'm not sure if he died, the younger sister was only a baby in the first film. Unless it was quite recent.

MrsJREwing Wed 26-Dec-12 16:07:31

She organised the yard sale and move alone, she drove the kids everywhere etc, no mention of a Dad.

whatalwayshappenlife Wed 26-Dec-12 16:08:32

And she's made to look like a very together mother/person.

Hosting a birthday party, taking them to pizza planet, moving house.

She's not a depressed or sad woman.

Trills Wed 26-Dec-12 16:09:17

Why would this be unreasonable (or indeed unseasonable)?

Pixar are great at I suppose reality.what children relate to.

Nemo was brought up by his single parent dad after mum died.
Old people as main characters.

I'm sure that there are more

I think the likely explanation is that Dad has died very shortlybefore the first film began. Dad is never mentioned and it's quite apparent to me that Woody has a paternal relationship with Andy. In the third film mum says that Woody is 'an old family toy'. I think Woody belonged to Dad.

Maybe it isn't trills but I was surprised to have only just noticed this by the 3rd film.

roughtyping Wed 26-Dec-12 16:15:59

Don't really understand the reasoning that dad's died.

I love Toy Story all the more because Andy's mum is a single parent.

SirSugar Wed 26-Dec-12 16:19:11

In new snowman if I wasn't mistaken, single mum as well

autumnlights12 Wed 26-Dec-12 16:22:57

Nemo was brought up by a single Dad, Lolz?! He's a ruddy clownfish!

MrsJREwing Wed 26-Dec-12 16:50:22

Cinderella, no Mum, then no Dad
SnowWhite, no Mum
Tangled, no Dad
Enchanted, no Mum

whatalwayshappenlife Wed 26-Dec-12 16:53:27

Tangled she had both parents.

slatternlymother Wed 26-Dec-12 16:57:25

Yes sirsugar I noticed that too.

I was 10 when the first Toy Story came out, I didn't even notice she was a single mum until I was about 15!

It's because making humans cost an awful amount on animated films so they just made one parent

PenguinBear Wed 26-Dec-12 16:58:41

I've never noticed I'll watch more carefully next time.

slatternlymother Wed 26-Dec-12 16:59:02

northern I thought the reference to 'old family toy' was because Woody had belonged to Andy from around toddler age, so he would be quite old in terms of toys?
