AIBU?

To hate New Year's Eve?

I love Christmas but just cannot be bothered doing anything for new year. My mum has offered to have the dc's so we can go out, I would rather stay in and watch a film and have a bottle of wine (and probably go to bed before midnight). It's too busy, too expensive, too annoying with drunk people everywhere. Should I make an effort? I'm 36 by the way. I can't be the only one! Xmas Hmm

ditto, but no mother offering to babysit, so phew, we have the perfect excuse!

Get your DM to babysit and stay in with your DH!

New years eve is too crowded, too expensive and there are too many idiots out and about. I never bother and it my birthday new years day! Lol just not worth it, even for a birthday celebration!

Er no, me too. I preferred booking a hotel room with dh pre kids and just hibernating. Now, well same but on sofa.

No q at my bar, no petty arguements unless I start one and I don't have to b out in cold. And why would I want to spend it in a bar where I pay £50 or so to get in?!?

I think Xmas is about socialising and ny about relaxing. I'm also 36, are we old?!?!?!

Yanbu - I haven't been out NYE for years. It would be my worst nightmare.

I also hate it. I used to offer to work the night shift to get out of the enforced jollity. Now I don't have that excuse but I still prefer a quiet night in and a night of evaluating the old year and thinking about the next year.

i'm the same age as you Op and have no kids and we don't bother either

DH and i will probably go to the pub early and have a few drinks, then go home to sit in front of the fire!

i cba with NYE - you get ripped off and can't get a cab anywhere for love nor money.

Another normal night here.

YANBU, it's almost always crap when you go out, take up your DM's kind offer and stay in - we have only ever enjoyed NYE in our own house or when staying over with good friends.....

actually last year we had a really good one. Went to Banff for the weekend so skiied during the day, then went out for a great dinner (no special menu/NYE $200 a head fixed dinner shite like a lot of the restaurants were doing)

then a drink in the bar afterwards, and out to the main street to see the fireworks, walked to hotel to bed

v civilised

I agree with you - it's horrible. I think the last time I did it I must have been about 21. That's 18 years ago! It was horrible even then, trailing around packed pubs trying to find people you knew, everyone drunk, men trying to snog you randomly. then walking home in the freezing cold.

Why does anyone bother?

Glad I'm not alone! The last time I went out on NY was about 6 years ago. We couldn't get a taxi home, I argued with Dp and walked home alone (about 3 miles on country roads). I had blisters for about 2 weeks. Unfortunately could not start on my New Years resolution of joining the gym as there was no way I could get my trainers on!

I hate it too, I am Mrs-Christmas but New Year, god it makes me miserable.

I wish I knew why.

Last NY was one of my worse ever, but then 2011 was a pretty hideous year that included a nervous breakdown, severe depression, loss of job, massive debt and then a whirlwind romance that culminated in an engagement to a twat and my heart broken after just 2 months (beginning to end).

Being medicated to the eyeballs probably didn't help.

What a difference a year makes though, now off meds and back to normal - albeit with a lovely blue bump to meet in April.

So yeah, NYE - poo and rubbish Grin

Try having a birthday on NYE. You can't book anything, can't go out, everybody's busy or pissed off.

I don't think it's age, I'm only 25. I think it's just sensible tbh!

I hate NY.

Last time I went out on NYE was when I was 30. I felt like a complete twat. I went to a couple of clubs with a friend. I felt like everyone there was about twelve. I realised I'd forgotten how to dance. My friend pulled and brought the guy home, while the only attention I got was a drunk guy joking to my face about how ugly I was. At midnight I was trying to ring my BF of the time only he wasn't answering because (as it turned out) he was with his other girlfriend.

This year my best friend with whom I usually share a spinstery New Year's drink/whinge has just moved away, so I'll be extra sad about that.

I hate going out NYE but I just wish they could put a decent film on rather than all these false bonhomie type tv shows where everyone is pretending to have a great time. The last NYE I went out for willingly was the Millenium.

I don´t hate it, but I´m not bothered about going out.

Happy enough to stay in, have a few fireworks, maybe manage to stay up until 12...

I also don't like New Year, I have analysed it over the years and come to the following conclusions.

  1. it's enforced fun, you must have fun on this particular date. I don't like being told to have fun.

  2. there's a structure and you can't change, so you have to be out until at least 1am - this is really the earliest you can leave, you might want to just do dinner but once out you are expected to stay out even if you in otherwise might feel your evening had finished at 11:30pm and had a nice time. whatever you are doing has to be stopped at midnight to sing in a circle and then kiss someone

  3. it is expected you will kiss someone at a particular point in the evening in a big public display. When single, it puts pressure on you to snog a random you might not like, if you are in a couple but have single friends, it's terribly uncomfortable for them. I don't like PDAs.

  4. It's crap timing because a) The weather usually takes a turn for the worse after Christmas.
    b) You've just had Christmas and stuffed your face for weeks but then have to squeeze into a slinky dress - under normal circumstances, if you had a 'big expensive' night out, you'll spend the week before cutting back on the carbs, not eating a chocolate orange for breakfast then a tin of quality street each evening.
    c) Often it's flu season (nirovirus giving an unusual twist on that this year) so someone in a group will be recovering or at the level of illness where you'd normally stay at home but if you've bought tickets to something you feel you have drag yourself out of your sickbed and go.

  5. it's far too expensive - the same night out would cost you half as much the following week.

  6. there are too many drunk people about, everywhere is over crowded and the chances of a drunk person throwing up on your shoes is very, very high.

I loathe NYE with a passion , because I always have to work it . Which means instead of chinking a glass of something pleasant with the DH at midnight , I am usually being slurred at by some horrible drunk going ' but I luuuurrrrve you ... ' instead . No , you don't love me . And I really really don't love you.
