AIBU?

To think that if you give someone an old iPhone they shouldn't expect the charger as well?

I feel awful. The lady who cleans for me once a week rang me and asked if she could have my old iPhone that she must've noticed on the shelve for the past six months. I told her that the screen was cracked and she still wanted it. I must stress that there is a language barrier. She told me she would clean for free today. It's usually £15. So I deleted every thing and returned it to factory settings. Today I gave her it and she asked me for the charger. All I have is the wire but not the plug. I told her that she could plug it into her laptop (which she needs to do for iTunes anyway) and she was fine with that. Then we put her SIM card in and the phone said that it needs to have a matching SIM card. I assume it means orange as that's my phone company. She got arsey about that when I told her she will have to buy another SIM card. I've just got a note saying "please, please, please give me the charger" what shall I do go out and buy her a charger or, ask for the phone back next week and give her the £15?

If you had the charger, you should give it to her. If you don't, she should get her own.
Personally I'd get a new cleaner, she sounds like trouble.

Ask for it back and give her the £15. Way too much hassle.

If she's online then you could try sending her a link to where to buy a charger from but really.

If I had the charger I would give it to her, but I wouldnt buy one specifically. She can gt one from ebay or a multi-use charger from the pound shop.

She can get a free orange SIM card from the corner shop, online etc

No, tell her you haven't got a charger. And give her the choice, give the phone back to you and you'll give her £15, or she goes and gets her own charger and you keep the £15.

I even put my wireless password into it so it will automatically connect when it comes into the flat and I showed her how that bit. I have a charger for my iPad and my new iPhone I bet she's seen them and wonders why I need two.

sounds like you have a locked iPhone.

I was on 02 and got mine unlocked for free by doing it online (had to wait a couple of days)

Why don't you have charger though? I have two iPhones and always got a charger when I bought them.

Blimey, talk about entitled Hmm tell her she can get a charger cheaply enough and SIM cards are free.

I would get the phone back and pay her the £15...

Cheeky arsehole! Moaning about not having a charger for an iphone which she was given for 10% of the resell value!! Angry I would find a new cleaner too TBH she is snooping and assuming you should give her your belongings (one of the chargers you have for your current iPhone and iPad) just because she has noticed you have more than 1! The cheek of it!!!

Ask for the phone back and give her £15

You could prob sell it for WAY more than 15, even with the cracked screen

YABU for getting into this in the first place.

How long has she been with you and have you had anything like this with her before?

The phone is three years old and the wire from the charger is threadbare. I have given her that bit just not the plug because I don't have it.

I really thought the message said it needed an orange SIM card. I can't unlock it I have no details on it as she's got it and I've thrown the SIM card away. She wanted that as well even though I told her it had been disabled. I've always just upgraded when I've been due I don't know anything about using phones separately. I wished if kept it for my nieces now.

Is it possible that she wants the charger so that she can sell the phone on?

I can't see why she'd be so unhappy otherwise, especially if you've been nice enough to connect it to your wi-fi.

You get good money for iPhones, even broken ones. Screens are very cheap to fix.

She has a very strange attitude. I think I would be looking for another cleaner.

In the meantime:

  1. Ask for the iphone back and sell it via one of the many buyback services. I got over £40 for my old broken 3gs iphone.
  2. Give her this plus £6 and her notice.

It's worth way more than £15. Even cracked. Buy it back. I'll buy it off you!

Is just locked to orange, she needs an orange SIM card. Direct her to eBay for the charger.

I didn't even think to sell it on. Stupid really. She's never asked for anything before although she's not a great cleaner and I have walked in on her using my drier before. Her and her sister have been with me for years. If I try to address anything they just look blankly and say they don't understand. Like asking them not to come at 730am when I'm getting ready for work. Other than that she seems really nice.

From the extra information you've given, I would get rid of your cleaner. I did just look up on eBay and you can get a plug for about £1.00. I knew it would be cheap as we quite often have to replace ours due to loss Blush.

Ok, I don't know anything about iphones. But you had something that was broken, and you swapped it for the price of her cleaning for you? And she thought the charger was included but you hadn't intended that?

I don't get why it is a big deal?

Can you use the charger for something else?

Report
samandi · 13/12/2012 08:26

Er, get a new cleaner.

eBay is your friend if you want to get her a charger but I don't think you should. To not give her it I think will pee her off and do you want an annoyed person in your home?
