10yr old dd keeps losing things-latest item over £100

My 10 dd1 is a scatterbrain(seems to have inherited it from me and her grandad) and so this term has lost a coat and a jumper but she has now lost the crook fom the mini-basson we rent from the music department. to replace this will cost £168.50, if the music department want us to pay(as I expecting as it is our responsibility) I have told her she will get no pocket money until it turns up or she has paid back the money it has cost us. AIBU

There is a good chance that the school/county music dept will have an insurance policy to cover this. Fingers crossed.

Incidentally if this is "inherited" did your parents make you pay for what you lost?

I know it's maddening and my DC2 has always been worse than DC1 for misplacing stuff. I didn't call her a scatterbrain, just careless. This time the lost object happens to be very expensive, are you proportionally more annoyed than over her losing her coat or jumper? Thankfully our DD seemed to grow out of it (or paying towards replacements sharpened her efforts). Keeping back all your DD's pocket money to cover all the replacement does seem unreasonable imo.

My mum was a shouter and just got cross so I tended to try and replace things or try to hide that I'd lost things as I was worried about her reaction. As I got older she did make me replace things or refuse ti by replacements. I'm just getting really exasperated because it seems to be one thing after another at the moment and we can't really afford to replace this at the moment, the basson is insured on the house insurance but we have an excess of £250. I just feel that she is old enough to understand that lost things have to be made for/replaced paticularly if they belong to some one else

You know how usually people describe their holidays by "the wet fortnight in Brittany", "the one when we camped and got flooded", "the one where X learned to swim in the sea"?

We used to categorise them by what DC2 lost - "the one when she put the book in the back of the hire car and forgot", "the time we went by train to Z and she left her brand new jacket", "the one when she put down her bag in Arrivals and only remembered getting in the taxi" etc.

When they are tiny we look after all their things, as they grow older that degree of parental supervision is meant to lessen, I feel your pain.

My son (yr 7) has lost his whole PE kit (replacement cost about £90, as included football boots, trainers, mouthguard etc), his coat, and now his mobile phone- he just doesnt seem to care! I have said that he will be getting the replacement PE kit for his main Christmas present, as I couldnt afford this and what he want.
Thank God he is learning Drums at school, so the only thing he has to take are his drumsticks, or he would have lost something there too!

What's a basson?

I don't know how you can make her take better care of her things, but perhaps she could do jobs/lose pocket money towards paying for what she's lost. Must be infuriating, is she upset about the things she has lost?

She was upset when she realised she'd lost so at least she does care about the fact that she has lost it and we have told her that money will being coming out of pocket meny to replace it if it is not located. I had asked the school to check today with the teacher to see if she or the ohter pupil has it but the teacher will have left by now and the school hasn't phoned me. I'll have to ask the office tonight and if necessary to try to speak the other pupil myself and then ring the music department myself

by the way the bassoon is big woodwind instrument, the full size one when pit together would be about as tall as my dd, thankfully she plays a mini one. I always accompany it to school aven though it is one the house insurance as a new one would be about £2500

I used to 'lose' a lot of things around that sort of age, my parents were at there wits end with me. The truth...I was being bullied and having them taken from me but I was too scared to admit it

babys, don't think things are being taken as she loses things all place, jumper on bus, coat at guides etc, think it probably got left behind when packing away after lesson

In future is it worth considering getting specific instrument insurance? We get dds instruments insured through Allianz.
