PTA poison wine.... (not serious)

It was the kids' christmas fair on friday after school. I won 4 bottles of wine on the booze tombola.

1st bottle was a lambrini with a competition which expired in 2006. (It was a dodgy colour and looked evil, ditched in a bin outside the school!)

2nd bottle was one, when looked up on a wine website said "best consume in 2010"

3rd bottle was a 2008 wine (looked this up on a website as well)

4th was a lidl perry (drinkable).

I ditched the lambrini as soon as I got outside the school. My nan said I should of complained there and then, I said it really is a fund raiser for the school, so you can't complain.

It is the general family consensus is I should complain so they put it in the news letter that they don't want poison old bottles of booze.
My other half thinks I should re-gift it (but not to him)
I think I should leave it as I don't want to cause a fuss or poison anyone (if the worst comes to the worst I'll clean the sink with it)...
What do you think?

I think it could be mentioned to the school to check items are at least in date. I don't think that's bu whatever the product.

When ds starts school (in two years) I will be the parent who donates the ancient bottles of wine to the tombola. It's the only way I'm going to get rid of the stuff.

We have been given at least 3 bottles every Christmas for the last 5 years. Neither dh or I drink wine. I try to hand it back out to people as presents but I can't remember who gave us what...

I think the rule is you keep them and very generously donate them to the 2013 school Christmas fair, whilst basking in the gratitude of the hopefully short memoried PTA

It's probably been donated back to the school several times over.

I'd not complain, but I would mention that prizes should be in date.

I think you should mention it in a light hearted manner, seems a bit 'off' to donate out of date items, yes it's fund raiser but they should note use by dates regardless

As a PtA person, I would check all sell by dates and dispose of anything out of date.

Stickem you need to do what my mum does - put a label on the wine gift saying who it is front. Generally once the guests have gone. Then once you need to gift one away you won't give the same wine back...

To be fair, everyone probably thought wine improves with age... Even lambrini (boak!)

Ok I know one of the mums who is quite into the pta, I'll mention it to her in a jokey way. I didn't want to come across as a complete party pooper/prude.

I really didn't know what to do or how it would come across if I complained!

I would never even think to look at sell by dates on wine I win in raffles or tombolas. I'ts usually drunk as soon as I get home.
Mind you I've never been that lucky at tombolas, I usually win the Fairy liquid or a bottle of handwash.

When helping set up the bottle tombola last year, I spotted a tatty labelled bottle of something with greek writing on that looked familiar, so I carted it round the stalls. After consulting all the old hands, it was agreed that it had been in circulation for at least five school fairs, summer and winter, and more than one church fete as well.

Then someone with good eyesight found a useby date.

when min were in primary and i was helping with raffles I had to go through the off wine and sob and just throw it down the sink people donate allsorts of guff once got 1 of those rose wines in the cargo netting probably went out of dat ein 1978

Made me smile. Many years ago I lived in Wiltshire and there was a big bottle of very cheap sparkling which had been doing the rounds for so many years that when we decided, having received it back for the third time, that we should donate a new bottle. As the bottle doing the rounds was cheap we decided to shake it and spray it over the team at the end of season. Needless to say it didn't fizz out the bottle at all!

Yes, I would let the PTA know - not exactly complain, but if it was me, I would want to know.

Unfortunately, I think this is all to common with PTA type donations and is something that they should be aware of and checking for at future events.

2010 will be fine, 2008 may be, taste cautiously.

2006 is really unlikely to be fit for anything except the bin.
