Definitely is definitely the most common spelling mistake on MN.

My teacher at school many years ago taught us it is de FINITE ly.

AIBU to share this tip?

No drives me mad as well. Along with should of instead of should have. I'm going to stop now before I go into a rage.

I am probably guilty of this, my fingers type "definately" automatically, even though my brain knows it's an I not an A. I try to correct it if I notice, I promise.

YANBU to share this tip

I had trouble with this spelling for years (and I am a pretty good speller!) till my Dsis helpfully told me about FINITE grin

Glitterknickaz Fri 23-Nov-12 18:09:42

Yeh defanitely a good iydeeur wink

lottiegarbanzo Fri 23-Nov-12 18:11:47

YANBU, it is a genuinely difficult one, as the pronunciation could suggest otherwise.

I have a dyslexic friend who always writes 'defiantly' instead, as in 'I am defiantly interested in doing that', which makes me giggle (in a sympathetic but it's still funny way. I know he really cannot spell).

ConfusedPixie Fri 23-Nov-12 18:20:32

YANBU. But I'm another who's fingers type definately. It was only when I got Chrome (and it's spell checker) that I realised what I was doing!

Glitterknickaz Fri 23-Nov-12 18:21:31

Discusted is another one.

Dogsmom Fri 23-Nov-12 18:32:04

I'll deffo try and spell it correctly in future.

usualsuspect3 Fri 23-Nov-12 18:33:57

Y A definitely being U.

Startail Fri 23-Nov-12 18:35:41

Try telling sodding auto correct that as lottie says we dyslexic people put an a where there should be an e because it suggests all sorts of malapropisms, but definitely is often not one of them.

Shattereddreams Fri 23-Nov-12 18:43:49

Startail I too am dyslexic, probably why I love all the old school rules for spelling.

usualsuspect3 Fri 23-Nov-12 18:44:46

There is a pedants' corner on MN.

WorraLiberty Fri 23-Nov-12 18:46:39

I disagree

I think the most common mistake on MN is 'Advice/Advise'.

ChromosoneShortOfHuman Fri 23-Nov-12 18:48:48

That's a tricky tricky work that one, especially if you are dyslexic...confused the life out of me for years, I even used to argue with people I was correct, spell check told me different. hmm

ChromosoneShortOfHuman Fri 23-Nov-12 18:50:26

word not a work...angry Jesus Christ anyway bit picky is it not?

I say lots of silly things like

brian instead of brain
diary instead of dairy

I'm okay with advise/advice as they are different, hmm yes my head is messy!

butisthismyname Fri 23-Nov-12 18:53:03

discusted - arghhhh. I was browsing <whisper> NM yesterday - almost started a thread here actually but knew it wasn't The Right Thing To Do, and 'discusted' came on soooo many times. Also 'your', Gah.

ScrambledSmegs Fri 23-Nov-12 18:58:20

I thought it was loose/lose, Worra.

I cba to point it out if people get stuff wrong though, life's too short. My spelling and grammar isn't perfect either.

HowDoidelete Fri 23-Nov-12 19:03:37

I always think of nits, not nats.

As in defi-nit-ely.

ChromosoneShortOfHuman Fri 23-Nov-12 19:06:09

I break my words down:

TartyMcTart Fri 23-Nov-12 19:10:18

I can cope with 'definitely' but cannot bear 'should of' FFS it's 'should have' angry

JellyBelly10 Fri 23-Nov-12 19:10:35

For some reason I have always remembered the correct spelling of definitely by saying (in my head!) "Defin-ite-ly, shite-ly!" blush

Pixel Fri 23-Nov-12 19:13:43

I have a dyslexic friend who always writes 'defiantly' instead, as in 'I am defiantly interested in doing that'

I got a text last week asking if dd 'defiantely' wants an ipad (on hire scheme thingy). Whichever word it was supposed to be it was spelt incorrectly, although I amused myself with thoughts of her signing up for an ipad against our wishes wink. Was also a bit hmm as text was from her school.

psychomum5 Fri 23-Nov-12 19:14:57

sort of unreasonable. I get confused.

although 'GAWJUSS' fucks me off!!

what the hell is wrong with gorgeous

McTagster Fri 23-Nov-12 19:15:41

It's also very annoying when people (in general, not necessarily on mn) don't seem to know the difference between:
They're, There and Their
Your and You're
Grrr, it's not that hard!!
