AIBU?

To Ask You NOT To Say/Write/Text Xmas?

ThePoppyAndTheIvy · 20/11/2012 23:58

Just that really. What the hell is Xmas anyway? Whether we believe in god or not, we can all understand that Christmas is so called because it supposedly celebrates the birth of Christ.

So, what do we celebrate at Xmas - the birth of X?

Hate it I do, hate it. And I admit to thinking a little less of anyone who uses it.

And I'm not even religious!

YABU. X is shorthand for Christ, originates from a Greek abbreviation.

YANBU.

I hate it too. I was going to start a thread on it the other day but got distracted.

How hard is it to put in the other 5 letters?

Would you prefer "Chrimbo"?

Or, as they say across the Atlantic "Happy Hollibobs"

ThePoppyAndTheIvy · 21/11/2012 00:05

InNeedOfBrandy - no, I didn't. I wouldn't count myself as a christian - or anything else for that matter.

Pandemoniaa - as shite as the word Chrimbo is, I prefer it to Xmas yes!

Lots of brandy for you at Christinselxmas?

Report
InNeedOfBrandy · 21/11/2012 00:08

OP you are missing the point of xmas it's a midwinter feast and not everyone celebrates it as the birth of christ (if they even was one on this date) it can be called whatever anyone wants to call it and was around before the so called birth of christ.

The X is something to do with orthodox Christianity where X represents the name of Christ, it being the initial of the name Christos in Greek.
It isn't an atheists get-out...Christmas took the place of Yuletide and absorbed many of the Yuletide traditions.
So, YABU. Sorry!

I hate it too. Not for religious reasons but just because any abbreviations or textspeak are annoying.

Its just like Christina Aguilera refers to herself as 'Xtina".

I attach no great sentimentality to the Christ part of Christmas, so have no problem using the short version of Xmas.

I only actually care about Yule anyway, unfortunately my whole family celebrate Xmas instead.

Brandy maybe, sherry definitely.

I even put a roll of otherwise perfectly naice wrapping paper back today as I noticed it said "Merry Xmas" on it in small letters. I wanted to scream, in the middle of Morrisons, "it isn't bloody well spelt Xmas!". I kept calm & retreated to the safety of the bread aisle instead.
