Why do we need docs and films about a shite fanfiction book.

For the same reasons you started this thread? People like to talk about things that have been over-hyped.

I personally enjoyed the books, they relit the passion for reading.

Documentary exploring the phenomenon of EL James's erotic novel, which is the UK's fastest-selling paperback of all time. The programme examines the sociological and cultural effects that Fifty Shades of Grey is having on the nation, with visits to a spanking class for novices and an S&M couple who have had contracts for sex drawn up for each other.

That is ridiculous!

Gosh it was awful...but I read it to see what all the fuss was about. It didn't 'relight a passion for reading' it made soft porn acceptable and allowed women to feel a bit naughty by reading it in public.It/they demean women in every possible way.
yanbu

Tis misogynist twaddle - like Twilight - and I thought we were over these threads.

Well for me it did, before 50sog ( which I got so I could join in with the conversation at work) I didn't pick up a book in over 6 years.

I am afraid that is not a comment on the book MCP but on you. What you have read since is more relevant I think.

Uppermid · 20/11/2012 21:57

What's the problem? Some people enjoyed it, others didn't. Why does anyone have to be right/wrong?

My current book is Days of Blood and Starlight, the book before was the hunger games, a walk in the park. I am greeting a nice little pile of books :)

I'm actually proud of the fact that I've never read this book.

I was sitting across from a woman at the airport who was reading it with the smuggest smile on her face. It made me feel a tiny bit eww.

Report
InNeedOfBrandy · 20/11/2012 22:04

I'm not really interested whether people smugly like or dislike this book. My nan loved this book and kept telling me how hot she was getting eww. What really bugs me is it was shitly written, fan fiction and got given a label and apparently its changed us all into S&M and being a dominatrix!

Your man told you how hot it got her????

I haven't read it in protest but a doc investigating just why such a pile of crap the book was such a runaway hit would be interesting actually as you can't deny that it was!

The books were badly written and repetitive. That's why I didn't like them.

I have been overdosing on chic-lit recently, to my shame, and was amazed at how similar "Unsticky" by Sarah Manning was to 50 Shades of Grey.

Not so intrigued that I checked out the publishing timelines mind you, but there are so many similarities - young girl, older guy, signature of a non-disclosure agreement etc...

Unsticky not as rude as 50 Shades though.

Every so often we get books that get overhyped or "go viral"
but people read them, talk about them, even if its to deride them

The fact is people like to discuss and comment on them

I do feel inadequate as I can't join in a discussion on Da Vinci Code, Twilight or Shades of Grey

but ask me about Isaac Asimov, Christopher Brookmyre, Ian Rankin, Douglas Adams, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett...

to each their own

I don't think it's racy enough for your gran by the sounds of it InNeed Grin

Does the thread turn upside down with anyone else when they post by the way? Always confuses me !
