Otherwise, isn't it illegal to advertise one price and yet charge another.

I could be wrong, but I doubt if a company the size of IKEA would do this intentionally

Was clearly displayed as a lower price on the shelf. Charged a higher price at the checkout. I know it is not illegal, but is certainly misleading! Could have been ripped off if I wasn't paying attention. The checkout operator said that the lower price was intended for 'Family Card' holders. Sounds intentional to me...

Normally, any time an item is reduced for ikea family card holders, it will say so on the signs. Tell them that they're not doing their signage very well.

I've noticed that the lower price is shown in large text with the non family member price below it in much smaller text. Easy to miss if you're not looking out for it so in a way YANBU. As waiting sayd, their signage should be done better

This exact thing happened to me. It was an item that was marked as substantially cheaper than you would expect. I checked it very carefully as it was so cheap. There was no mention of the Family Card - just a reduction from £26 down to about £12.

I got to the till and they charged me full price. I took issue with it and they trotted out the Family Card line. I dug my heels in and they eventually sent someone to check - he came back and admitted the signage was misleading but they still refused to give it to me at the lower price.

So I abandoned my shopping in a huff and left without everything I had come in for.

Which was a massive pain in the neck when I had to go back the following day as I really needed one of the other items.

To be honest, having the family card is quite a good thing. You get free tea or coffee on weekdays (or free soft drinks if you're cheeky enough to just use the mug for cold drinks instead of paying for a glass), lower prices on certain things (as you've found out...), insurance on items for transportation damage or build errors etc. I think you can get extra discount on bargain corner items too on certain days but dont quote me on that.

Also, on an unrelated note, if an item has been in bargain corner for more than a week (it has a date on the sticker) you can ask for a bigger discount and they'll probably give you one.

There's no point getting the Family Card - I hardly ever go in the bloomin place. Even less likely to now. the thing is I would have quite happily paid the higher price if they were open and transparent about it!

Even if the lower price is displayed in a smaller font, that leaves the hard of seeing at a disadvantage - the vulnerable are more likely to be ripped off!

You also get other offers with the family card, I am not sure what you get in the UK but here you get cheap weekend breaks, really cheap like 5 pounds.

They also send you the catalog when it comes out.

I have only ever seen it as both prices with a picture of the family card near the cheaper price.

It's very annoying when that happens but I can't see a reason not to just get a card, free drinks and cheaper prices - what's not to like.

I didn't want a Family Card! I just wanted to go in, get what I wanted and get out. I just want IKEA to be honest and display correct prices. Surely anyone with a Family Card will already know about its advantages, and the smaller price on the label could be directed at them, as they will know to look for it?

Er, you do know that it's just a loyalty card? It's not a credit card or anything. There are in store touchscreen points where you can enter your details on a screen and it prints out a bar code you can use straight away until they send you out a card. You don't even have to talk to a human being.

Well, no I didn't know it at the time. I had never heard of it until I got to the checkout. like I said, I went in there for one thing. Just wanted to get it and get out. I never go in there, so no need for a loyalty card. I would have paid the higher price if it was displayed on the label and they hadn't given me the hump...
