Haven't been out for country pub lunch for a while, and am a bit surprise that the standard price for a burger and chips in a nice pub seems to be £ that a bit much or have I just lost track of inflation? You can get a proper plate dish for £13-18 which is understandable, but burgers at £12...?

Canuck, I can only guess those are Harrods prices aimed at tourists. I imagine the Dorchester or other five stars might be up at that level, but it's a bit much for a cafe at the greengrocers!

Pipers restaurant in Garstang, nr Lancaster does amazing burger and fat chips (which I normally detest, but theirs are gorgeous!), on the lunchtime menu. My favourite is the one with the local blue cheese and a big mushroom.

I want one now.... right now.

With a strawberry milkshake.

(That would probably set me back about £14 with the milkshake, but it's worth it.)

£9 for a glass of wine?! £4 for a can of coke?! faints
Seriously glad I don't live in London, that's ridiculous!! Approx £1.60 a coke in a pub/restaurant here, or £2.50 for a large glass of wine!

quirrel I didn't pay - it was a date! I win!

crazycanuck Sat 17-Nov-12 12:35:39

RichTeas I was going to go for the wine, till I saw it was £9 a glass!

In our local on a Wednesday you get, burger chips and a pint of lager for £5.95.

Any other time burger and chips is £4.95.

At the best pub in town it's about £7

£4 for a can of Coke is ludicrous ! May as well go for a glass of wine, it won't be much more and is actually healthier.

I think we have been living in London too long. £11 for a burger/ chips etc, and £4 coke seem average to me now.

I do LOVE visiting my parents though! Last time we went down we went to a bar and I was paying for a round of drinks ( i think 5 people), and the total for 5, was easily the same as 1/2 people in London! I think I had a spiced run and coke for £9.50 in my local pub recently, it's was £2.50 in Kent! My mother almost keels over at the price of water on London ( but actually doesn't seem to notice as much now se has visited lots)

shock crikey!

mumsfretter Sat 17-Nov-12 10:59:48

I see your can of coke for £4 and raise you a "healthy breakfast" consisting of a bowl of porridge and some fruit with yoghurt for ........£19.50!!!! London Hotel we visited recently.

crazycanuck Sat 17-Nov-12 10:44:52

I see your £12 burger and raise you the £4 can of Coke I saw on the menu in a cafe in Harrods last week!

quirrelquarrel Sat 17-Nov-12 10:04:51

They're your pounds too ifancy grin they'd never get any of mine for just a burger!

I can get a veggie burger here for about £2. Win, I think.

LauriesFairy - I haven't stopped thinking about burgers since yesterday grin. I am about to persuade DH that we need to go out for lunch so I order the burger I described. He will probably be surprised that I am thinking about burgers so early in the morning!

Just been for a date lunch and had a burger that was bloody delicious. Minced serloin steak. With amazing triple cooked chips and all sorts of poncetastic toppings. £18 of your British pounds. Chelsea...

(gets coat and leaves whilst whistling under breath)

Quality burger and chips here (North Down) £5-7, local chippy does a lunchtime special burger and chips with a tin of coke/club for £2.80 which is as good as if not better than any I have tried.

I am actually drooling at the thought of FestiveDigestives burger.

Fuck me, I want one of those envy

bigTillyMint Fri 16-Nov-12 17:16:07

It's about a tenner for a ponce-tastic decent quality burger and chips in local gastro-pubs here in our corner of London.

Great thanks DH loves Boot - he went to the Boot beer and sausage festival last year

quirrelquarrel Fri 16-Nov-12 16:06:33

ah just cut open an orange and unleashed gorgeous orangey smell.

that's all you need.

quirrelquarrel Fri 16-Nov-12 16:05:48

I had a cheese and pickle sandwich at a pub outside the Victoria coach station. FIVE POUNDS. ridiculous. But I wanted a pint (hours to kill) and had no cash on me, had to make up the balance and nowhere else around there took plastic so picked the cheapest and yet most filling thing I could find at a glance. The little salad garnish it came with was nice, but the actual sandwich was just....slightly stale bread with grated cheese and probably pickles out of a jar!

theoriginalandbestrookie I think its called The Bridgehouse inn. Not 100%. If you turn left when you walk out of the station in Boot its the first pub. Its a big white pub. Try it, its lovely.

I would just like to say wetherspoons beef burger Topped with two bacon slices and a Stilton, Shropshire blue & spring onion sauce and Includes six beer-battered whole onion rings. Is pretty delish and under a tenner with a pint of cider. Not inceland type burgers at all.

valiumredhead Fri 16-Nov-12 15:41:53

I have just a fab one with pickle and stilton - omg it was fabulous!
