I have an acquaintance who constantly comments on how much she hates Iceland frozen food and how cheap it is and how disgusting it must be. It seems to be a running joke with her and all her friends. Acquaintance is well off and I can't help thinking her jokes are not funny and actually some people might need to buy the cheap food Iceland offers. AIBU?

I find the whole food shop snobbery a bit confusing and amusing at the same time snooty people make me laugh cos they are really showing themselves up as being complete twats.

who cares who shops where I do think your friend is so far up her own bum and should be mocked for being such a loon, saying that i saw the iceland lasange squares advertised and thought ewwwww no that is just wrong.

I used to be piss poor and didnt shop at iceland poor people are everywhere and they shop everywhere,

I don't think there's any "good" reason to make fun of people for what they eat, but certainly there's poor people who cook good, wholesome food for their kids. I think it's pretty shite to feed your kids a steady diet of frozen Iceland food. Buy a bag of frozen chicken breast, some lentils, some brown rice, a some herbs and spices and head to the market for fruit and veg.

It is an odd thing to be smug about. I honestly don't care what other people feed their kids, bar neglect of course.

stubbornstains Wed 14-Nov-12 08:56:33

I'm poor. And I'd never shop at Iceland. Overprocessed shite. Much cheaper to buy staples and cook from scratch.

It is a strange one to be smug about eh, yet people do it all the time hmm

I wonder if it is a UK thing.

I wonder if people in France look down on the plebs who shop in Casino, or whatever.

Mrsjay Wed 14-Nov-12 09:11:52

OH i dunno dont the french go to the markets daily and buy local kill their own pigs grin I am sure they don't the supermarkets when i go when on holiday are always packed with french people doing their weekly shop,

MotherfuckingMorrisMan Wed 14-Nov-12 09:14:35

And the French supermarkets have nearly as much processed shite as Uk supermarkets now, imo.

And bizarre jars of grey peas.

I love foreign supermarkets. It is the highlight of a holiday looking at all that unusual food. loser

MotherfuckingMorrisMan Wed 14-Nov-12 09:15:17

DD made me laugh when we went to a French rural market, she thought the cages of chickens and bunny rabbits were being sold as pets. grin

FreudiansSlipper Wed 14-Nov-12 09:19:07

you see and hear this all the time mn is full of it

best to remember it is about them wanting to impress others rather than looking down on others is laughable really who really cares where others get their shopping

IneedAsockamnesty Wed 14-Nov-12 09:26:46

Weren't Iceland the first food chain shop to go gm free on own brand food and used to only stock organic baby food jars?

MotherfuckingMorrisMan Wed 14-Nov-12 09:27:44

I don't judge those people who buy pre packaged shit either.

When I was young and skint I couldn't cook either, I lived on 'orrible stuff like 99p admiral pies and cauliflower cheese grills, because I couldn't cook anyway. Oh well I was 16.

MotherfuckingMorrisMan Wed 14-Nov-12 09:28:46

Yes iirc they were the first to do organic frozen veg, years ago and well before anyone else got on the bandwagon.

pictish Wed 14-Nov-12 09:31:26

Well...I'm skinto to the max, and I wouldn't shop there either.

No-one HAS to shop at Iceland because they are poor. I don't. It mings.

but how do iceland manage to mae there food look soooo badin the adverts.

IneedAsockamnesty Wed 14-Nov-12 09:38:32

Confession time but crappy admirals pie is a guilty pleasure of mine, I have no idea why but even when I was little I would pinch them from a friend ( with permission ) she would even burn a fish finger to make it hard enough to dip through the mash.

The woman was a genius and bloody wonderful with it.

Was married to a very interesting q type of chap who made spy gadgets during the war, I have very fond memories of sitting at her table whilst he thought me how to hide maps in sugared almonds that could be read when peed on whilst she gave me the pie. Obviously no pee was at the table.

MotherfuckingMorrisMan Wed 14-Nov-12 09:49:12

That is hilarious! I like the idea of the burnt fishfinger dipper.

Pissing on sugared almonds!

Mrsjay Wed 14-Nov-12 09:51:17

I do like their PLATTER food though just not lasange squares who thought that was a tasty nibble

MotherfuckingMorrisMan Wed 14-Nov-12 09:52:13

Those lasagne squares look ghastly. I can't imagine why anyone agreed that would be a good idea.

TheREALPeachActiviaMinge Wed 14-Nov-12 09:53:44

Iceland party food

pictish Wed 14-Nov-12 09:56:29

peach - heh heh! grin

I think that about sums it up nicely.

IneedAsockamnesty Wed 14-Nov-12 09:57:12

They were possibly the most amazing people I ever met, the inventions he used to come up with we're brilliant, one of my most treasured possessions is the boxed set of signed books he wrote and a biography another author wrote about him.

She was even more brilliantly clever than him.the fish finger dippers are legendary in our family now.

MulledWineOnTheBusLady Wed 14-Nov-12 10:37:44

I mock a lot of crap, processed food that I nonetheless consume like a hog from time to time (Sara Lee's Double Chocolate Gateau, step forward). Crap, processed food deserves to be mocked, whether it's cheap or not (and it usually isn't, no matter where it's from).

If she's assuming all cheap food must be crap, then obviously she is missing out on, er, vegetables. But I don't know whether that really is her assumption, or yours about her.

ihavenofuckingclue Wed 14-Nov-12 10:40:12

But still, I hate that some people can't make ethical and healthy choices and might feel mocked for it.

Do you not think this is mocking them? They shop at Iceland so must be uneducated?
