I think the people who forget are those that usually drive a car with automatic headlights ie me when I drive my mum's car. I got pulled over after forgetting to put them back on after getting petrol in a very very well lit area in my mum's granmobile.

Easy mistake to make. Flash them, or do the internationally recognised hand gesture for lights (and boob honking).

The instrument panel isn't invisible when the lights aren't on, it's just dimmer.

My instrument panel lights up the minute I turn the key in the ignition regardless of whether my lights are on or not.

My instrument panel lights up whether lights are on or not. I agree it's when leaving a lit area that you need to be extra vigilant. Leaving the supermarket is the place I've done it twice.

When working in the petrol station I can guarantee at least 3 people during a 3 hour shift will leave the main carpark without their lights on, drive round the roundabout and into the distance. Drives me nuts! YANBU.

A month ago I was coming up the M11 from Stansted, it was almost completely dark and this car came up behind me with no lights on. With the bright lights of the other cars behind me, this guy was almost invisible. I was convinced I was about to watch a pile up....really, really scary!

Speaking of fog lights, if it's foggy, please turn them on. I have a rural commute to work and the number of people who not only don't bother with fog lights but ANY kind of lights in the fog is unbelievable. Just because you can see where you're going doesn't mean I can see you. And no, sidelights in fog are a joke. You may as well just lean out of the window and use your mobile phone to light your way. Your lights are not just there to help you see. They're there so you can be seen as well.

I agree with the brake lights comment - particularly the cars that have one on the rear windscreen or a 'bar' type light. They're blinding at close range.

...and turn your fog lights off when it isn't foggy. The number of people I see driving with fog lights in perfectly clear conditions, sometimes in daylight too - sheesh!

And while we're on a roll, check to make sure both your lights are working and you don't have one on full beam and one not working. Feels like half the cars round here are like that!
