yanbu

i had emmas diary call me 3 times this week (I was signed up without giving consent by my GP office!) I have asked them to remove my name, but no... still they call.

You do not want to know what I have said to the GP office.

I gave up. I just threw the phone away. Only use mobile now. Expensive option - but saved my sanity.

Either that or unplug the phone and only plug it in when you want to make a call out - means others have to call your mobile though.

Saves me running for the phone - I can just look at the screen and ignore!

Check to see if you can discern any pattern to the calls - ie a likely common source. If you can identify one (eg British Gas and ruddy Weathershield) get on to them and get them to check whether they've got you down as willing to receive calls. Some of these big firms are a little 'loose' on their data even though you may feel certain that you ticked/unticked the box for future contact. (And such contact is outside the TPS scheme where you've said you're OK with it.)

Yes - it's mind-blowingly annoying.

It's got to the point I don't even answer the phone now and let it go to answer machine.

I had one call two weeks ago asking for the previous home owner by name - she died 14 years ago and the cold caller didn't sound one bit sorry when I mentioned this. He'd no idea of my relationship with the person he was asking after. I'm hoping my response made him squirm.

Current favoured response - if I have time - is to let the people talk, make notes along the way and then ask lots of questions they can't answer.

Or say 'Back in a minute.....Hold on....' and then go away to dig the garden. Phone calls cost them virtually nothing but they hate the waste of time. Your number will soon get a black mark against it.

Try what the man did recently - he told them he would charge them for his time on the call (at £10/min). He then invoiced the company for £165! They paid up.

I either let it go to answer machine, or tell them I won't talk to them until they give me the 'password' :)

My mum got a cold call recently from someone wanting to talk to her about microsoft windows.

She put on her best befuddled old lady voice and kept saying "i'm all double-glazed here thank you lovie", until the caller hung up :)

(she knows very well what microsoft windows is)

Dh did a classic the other day - he said 'Hello, oh no no no, this is Lord and Lady Postlthwaite-appleby-tyth (or some similarly preposterous name) Washing machine? I'll have to ask the staff. what's that you say? We're hyphenated you know. What's that you say? My wife is mucking out the ponies. Washing machine?? Whats that you say?' etc etc. It went on for ages. Absolutlely hilarious. They put the phone down in the end

I am getting to the point of changing my mobile number and getting rid of my landline. I am plagued with PPI/Money Saving/Ambulance chasing phone calls on both my mobile and landline.

I must get 2 - 3 calls a day on each one and I am sick to the back teeth of it. I never answer, I used to ask them to take me off their list but it doesnt work. And they argue with you that yes you have had an accident - erm, no I havent - I must have PPI to claim back - again I dont. So sick and tired of it.

I pretend I can't understand what the caller is saying if they sound like they're calling from an indian call centre. They hang up really quickly as it gives their bosses a very unfavourable impression of their abilities. Harsh, but effective.
Or I walk away while they're still wittering on.
Recently the calls have been for private medical insurance - which I can't imagine anyone giving me as I'm not even one year on from treatment for fairly advanced cancer - when they say why they're calling I just laugh and exclaim that no-one in their right mind would give me medical insurance. They can't get the phone down quickly enough when they hear that :o

Just put the receiver next to your radio/tv. They will soon get the message.

We have had quite a few call for my mum in the last few weeks... she died in May it is VERY upsetting for my dad :(

I have put him on TPS but dosnt seem to make a difference, we have also had ambulance chacers calling about an accident i had in 2010 ( must have been amnesia as i dont rember it) I have given up with them now and just give the phone to the nearest twin, who will happily tell the 'phone people' all about his day at nursery and how he has just done a poo / smacked his brother/ won on the wii / played with pokemon... i can occasionally hear them asking if mummy is still there.... makes no diffence to the boys they can happilly rabbit away for hours without stopping - i have even trained them to put the phone back on the charger unit when the 'nice' people have gone ;)

I've started just putting the phone down. They're the ones that are rude calling me, when we are on the TPS. Angry

Having said that, there are some good ideas here! Grin Might try one or two of them out! Wink

I've bought a phone that displays the phone number and if it isn't local I ignore it.

Report
prettybird · 05/11/2012 18:12

I can't do that: not only do I have lots of friends and family abroad, but my dad uses a calling code which means that sometimes his number comes up as "international", SIL withholds her number because of problems with her ex, and the place I used to work (where I still have friends working) also withholds its numbers.

But I've noticed that dh, like me, is starting to just hang up on them.

I did once have a lady from "Microsoft Security Department" Hmm who happened to ring me when I had some time, so I played along for a bit. Then she got very annoyed with me when I told her I knew it was a scam and that she should be ashamed of herself ShockGrin
