DH said he was off the gym at at 2.30pm 'for a couple of hours'. I prepared dinner with roasties and everthing to be ready at 5pm. He is still not home. Oven now turned off and everything is congealing.

But: are you used to him disappearing for longer than he said he would? Is he vague on time, or does he enjoy jerking you around and accusing you of 'nagging'? Or did you cook dinner as a way to try and oblige him to come home and spend time with you?

I'd eaten mine and left his on the plate to be re-heated. I don't know how long "gym" takes. Have you rang him to check all is well before putting dinner in the bin? Could he have gone for a pint or something afterwards? Bumped into a pal? Who knows? If he didn't know to be back then YAB a bit U. Unless he does this all the time and usually rolls in steaming drunk at 11pm.

I'd plate up his food and put it in the fridge for me and the DC to eat tomorrow and let him sort out his own tea.

'A couple' does vary in context. A couple of weeks of holiday will always be two. A couple of maltesers could easily be 4. I looked after my friend's kid for a couple of hours could be anything between 1.5 and 3 (but not 4). A couple of hours at the gym could certainly never be more than 2, unless this gym is an hour's drive away.
