DM bought DD (17 months) a happyland fun fair set which was such good fun I was looking through their other toys online for Christmas inspiration when I found this

www.elc.co.uk/HappyLand-Khaleeji-Family/134473,default,pd.html

I really liked the fact that the fun fair set came with little people from all races, but I find this toy disturbing. Aside from the burkas, what's with the men sitting on thrones and the women tending donkeys?

DP is trying to rile me over it, so I have come to MN jury for some sanity.

I think your over thinking things. I actually think its good to see a product like that which reflect other cultures.

Yeah I'm not seeing a problem either. Except wondering whether or not to buy it for DD!

Because children from cultures other than your own shouldn't be allowed toys that reflect their families?

Proof you can find anything offensive if you put your mind to it

er, yes, threw me abit too. I suppose the manufacturers are responding to consumer choices, but then, is there a Happyland house for EVERY faith???

I think it's perfectly acceptable - all the figures are standing and are interchangable with any of the given tasks.

Some people just look to find offence in anything. You should take a look at teaching resource catlogues if you really want to see cultural sterotype dolls.

^shock horror* look a the picture inside the house - the female figure is in the kitchen - but on the bright side the kitchen isn't pink and glittery Grin

YANBU I think it is thoroughly disturbing and the majority of posters who say it's not are probably terrified at the horrific thought they may appear politically incorrect

You're kidding right, Mooblies? If not, are you in a competition for the most ridiculous post of the day?

DameFanny · 03/11/2012 17:22

There's only 3 cakes for 4 people. Very disturbing.

They are men sitting on thrones and women covered in black tending donkeys, not the kind of message of equality I want to give my children

Eh?

You do realise the figures can be moved? The ladies could be sitting on the chairs thrones and the donkey could be jumping out of the treehouse to the waiting arms of the man.

An people do wear those clothes. They really do. I've seen it

I think it's really cute. And all the figures look interchangeable. The women could be having tea whilst the men worked. Or maybe not!!

It's only the bloody PHOTOGRAPH to advertise the toy, at worst it's ignorance on the advertisers part, are the children who get the toy obligated to play with it that way? No. Talk about being offended for the sake of being offended.
