Would you put on nail varnish whilst on a flight?

Woman did today on the 4 hr flight I was on, and it absolutely stank! I could feel my asthma coming on. DH who was on the other side of the plane said it was really bad from where he was sitting too.

Maybe it's just me .... Although I have never noticed anyone ever doing this before.

No, it's not an ok thing to do - quite inconsiderate. (Mind you, I don't look up from my book for the safety 'demonstration', which is also considered inconsiderate in some quarters )

I wouldn't, and wouldn't appreciate anyone else near me doing it either. Pretty inconsiderate when people can't get out of the way of the smell. I think it's a bit of an odd thing to do really.

No it's not ok. It's very inconsiderate to people with lung conditions. It really affects me. It's the same with spraying perfume in enclosed areas. People do it in commuter trains when I'm going to work and it takes all my self-control to not say anything.

I remember going to the theatre and various other places in Canada and they had signs up telling people not to use any perfumes or aerosols in the ladies' toilets. I was impressed that they thought of that.

No, putting on mail varnish in any enclosed space is very U. I don't mind most smells but that's vile. I was once on the tube with my nephew who was 4 at the time, a woman nearby was putting on nail varnish and he very loudly asked what the horrible stink was. She put it away

I have done this on the train - touched up chips (always carry the bottle of the colour I'm wearing with me). Didn't realise it would be offensive.

To be fair, have only done it on kind distance trains - wouldn't do it on the daily commute would wait till I got to the office but I'm always the first one in.

Hadn't realised it could affect lungs etc.. Will think on...

Years ago when Dd I think about 3 or 4 I got told off for painting her nails on a flight as I was trying to keep her quiet and distract her from running up and down the isle

I think you are not being unreasonable - but then I was nearly knocked sideways on the tube last week when someone sprayed hairspray in their hair - it STANK. Also a lot of women wearing Coco Mademoiselle should be banned from doing it, as it's seriously stinky and suffocating.

Reminds me also that the woman who shared a room with me in the maternity hospital had aerosol deodorant and hairspray and a bleeding hairdryer. Crikey, it was seriously dangerous! Two tiny babies in our room too.

I think its fine, I've done it quite often when I fly long haul. But I tend to use that as an opportunity to do almost an entire spa session. I've seen other people doing it and I've never noticed a smell. I think some particular products may smell very strongly but most don't.

Lots of people are over sensitive.

I think trains are a bit different, as you don't tend to be on them so long, they're easier to move about in usually and the doors open every so often to waft some air about.

If you did it next to me you'd see what over-sensitive is rubyfakenails - when I coughed my guts up non-stop for the duration.

I hate people who use the fact that some people have sensitive senses to excuse their complete lack of consideration for other people. It's not me being loud, it's them having over sensitive hearing. If anything, knowing that other people's senses can be stronger than yours should be a reason to be more considerate not less.

I wouldn't mind if someone did it, but I wouldn't myself. Mind you, I grew up with a Dad who hated the smell and make his thoughts well known so I'm aware of how awful some people find it. I am also aware of how it can affect some people (ie those with asthma) but I expect a lot of people have no idea it can have that effect - so they're probably not being as selfish as it seems, just uninformed.

This reminds me of a woman in a long haul flight, she boarded the plane and first thing she does is to remove her shoes, her feet smelled putrid so... She covered the whole of her feet Snd people around her in aereosol deodorant, and then proceeded to apply half a bottle of the cheapest smelling perfume you can imagine. After 2 hrs me and half of the plane were prepared to lock her in the toilets if we had been given the opportunity.

Someone needs to start a thread about basic airplane etiquette. No applying nail varnish or perfume; no leaving your children in economy for others to mind while you sit in business...
