Is it that dangerous? If they are sold to the public where else are you supposed to let them off?

Yes, anything bigger than a sparkler should be restricted to those with at least an acre.

I guess it would depend on how big your garden was and where you lived and if you followed the correct precautions. When we were kids living in a village, one family had a party every year and in their bloody huge garden set off fireworks, everyone was invited and came and it was a really good night. Safety was taken very seriously and there was never any accidents or incidents.
However if someone set off fireworks round where we live now in terraces with tiny backyards and postage stamp front gardens I'd think they were a loon!

YANBU. The knobber down the road set one off last year and it sounded like a bomb. The whole road lit up like daylight and car alarms started going off. Children and pets alike were terrified.

Stick with the organised displays. There is no need to set off explosives in your own back garden.

Both Dd and I both got hit by falling rockets at separate public displays! Since then we have 10 mins of fireworks responsibly lit in our garden. It is great fun and i see no problem with it.

Anyone who sets off fireworks in a garden the size of mine is fucking stupid imo, but each to their own!

My brother on the other hand has a 3 acre back garden, plenty big enough for fireworks! Although as its a pub garden I guess he might not be allowed?

Would you rather they let them off in your garden?

Yanbu in any way I bloody hate them. They shouldn't be sold to the public it should be organised, licensed displays only.

Then I am such a person. The fireworks I buy are bright not loud-no rockets etc. We have a small box in our own garden for the dgc. The neighbours watch too and we all have hot dogs or/and jacket potatoes. The 4 children stand well back, the animals are locked in and no harm is done to anyone.

thegreylady that sounds like us, although our dog likes to watch from the window, daft springer.

It should absolutely be organised, regulated, public displays only.

And as for the "it's only once a year" point. Ha! It's every fucking night for a whole fucking month.

I hate that the fireworks scare my dog and wake my DCs. I could put up with that if it was just one night but it never is.

I was doing a nightshift whilst pg with DD and an illegal flare rocket that a neighbour just threw in their bonfire whizzed down the alleyway where my room was and came in my window. I was like a rocket myself, i got out of that room like lightening (only a tiny room too) and had to evacuate the house - a home for adults with disabilities. I have always been jumpy with fireworks in peoples gardens since then but do try and light a few tiny ones that make little noise so DD doesn't get any fear of them although that took several years before i could do that... she's 8 now!

I am in my forties so I must have seen at least say 35 lots of Fireworks since I was born. I would say that is plenty TBH. Nothing new to see. Confused

I only go to the organised displays. I would never have fireworks in our garden, the terrify me.

I can remember the adverts for firework safety as a kid, the one where a child gets hold of a red hot sparkler, still makes me shudder

I don't really get the hatred of fireworks tbh, I like them and enjoy other peoples firework displays, never bought any myself though, too expensive.
