AIBU?

to curse bloody trick or treaters and think taking your kids out to ask strangers for sweets with menaces leaves an opening for older ones to do all sorts of vandalism/tricks?

Halloween night some bloody trick or treaters egged the front of my cream painted house from about 25 feet up - so that's a couple of hours scrubbing tomorrow.

They also cracked my car windscreen - the car was parked on my private drive. Just rung Autoglass and they say it will need to be replaced. So that's £75 excess charge to me.

So, who still thinks it's a good idea to generally validate the idea that you can go on someone's property and do damage if they don't give you sweets?

BTW I'd already given out loads of friggin sweets but there were so many pesky little buggers children who rang the bell I'd run out by the time the older, vandalising gangs came round.

Hardly blood jolly japes is it? More like culturally endorsed crime. Halloween should be banned.

Oh turn it in ffs

My local pub got smashed up during a fight on Christmas Eve

Shall we ban Christmas too?

Blame the vandalising little shits who did that to you....not Halloween.

I don't like halloween or trick or treating myself but the crime is not culturally endorsed, criminal damage is not accepted by the vast majority of people who partake in trick or treating.

I'm sorry to hear how you have been treated though, it must be maddening. I know it isn't ideal but maybe think about a CCTV camera, I have a couple and the peace of mind from them is huge.

It's a bit early for one of these types of threads isn't it? Grin

What you say sounds awful though, nothing to do with halloween and everything to do with little scrotes who think they can create havoc.

What's the area you live in normally like? I can't believe they all just come out on the 31st and do nothing at all the rest of the year.

What Worra said. Never ever experienced those problems myself so I would hope you were very unlucky. I would also hope you're reporting that smashed windscreen to the police. Normal, decent kids don't turn into vandalising shits just because it's Halloween, they are probably always like that.

My kids understand the 'trick' part of Trick or Treat to mean you tell a joke if they ask for a trick instead of giving you a treat. Which is exactly what I thought when I was young. Not exactly 'demanding sweets with menaces' is it?

Well you know what?

Halloween is over til next year.

So next year, buy more sweets

FWIW my trick or treaters were lovely this year. No one did any damage.

I reckon we should ban New Years Eve as late night revellers broke the wing mirror on our neighbour's car and tried to do the same to ours and others. Really, unfortunately bad things happen, it is the fault of the offenders not the event or date!

Shall we just ban people?

That would be easier.

Superb idea, tantrums, why has no one thought of that before! Wink

Unrealistic Tantrums.

Ban people starting threads, unless they're specifically about frogs.

Should cut it down a bit.

I'm not saying crime is culturally endorsed but the 'trick' element leaves an opening for stupid little buggers to justify criminal damage as a trick.

BTW this area is normally very good. Don't know if we get Halloween immigrants or what - it's not happened in previous years.

Tantrums and Balloons I bloody well won't be getting any fecking sweets next year. They can all bog off with their bloody treats and stick em where the sun don't shine from now on.

I'll stand at the gates and give 'em a real scare and stop them from coming on my property. That'll learn 'em Grin

YANBU. It's unbelievable that Halloween is seen by some people as a free pass to cause damage to other people's property. I'm sorry about what happened to you OP. When I was pregnant with DS1 someone egged our livingroom window (it was a few days before Halloween) and it really upset me. It was so unexpected and really loud.

Anyone seen the latest episode of 'Grimm'? The werewolfy guy on that had a good way of dealing with some of the little vandals!

Sorry to hear that Tailtwister. I know whay you mean about the noise - it's suprisingly loud given it's just an egg.

Other 'festivities' are differnt. They don't involve going up to other people's houses and doing 'tricks' do they?

I live next to a policeman, he has the sort of surveillance on his house that would make the CIA run to Liberty to complain. Strangely we never get any bother! Grin

YANBU. It's all very well saying you might as well ban Christmas as well as that's just as likely to encourage hooligans, but that's not the same, really, is it?
Yes, vandals are little shites and don't need any excuse whatsoever to wreak havoc if they want regardless of what day it is, Christmas or whatever.
Halloween actively says 'trick or treat' though. As in "If you don't give sweets, we can play tricks egg you etc if you don't hand out sweets,
Sweets or menaces. Lovely, is Halloween. Hmm

Exactly WhizzPoP - it's putting the suggestion there that you are entitled to do something norty if you don't get your treat. Just enough for the slightly dimmer naughtily inclined kids to feel they have some sort of permission.

Actually there was a car burnt out in Liverpool shown on the tv news on Wed and they interviewed a local who said it was 'mischief'. I'd hate to see what their version of crimes is.

Gordy - I'm not 2 days late - this isn't a 'halloween' thread. It's a post halloween vandalism thread.
