AIBU?

to think that Taylor Swift song 'We are never ever getting back together' is actually rather praiseworthy?

Girl meets boy. They break up because they haven't seen each other for a month. He calls up claiming he loves her and can change, she takes him back, it lasts for a minute, he picks fights and claims he needs his space and is generally a bit of a hot&cold character.

She gets fed up of this behaviour, dumps him and strolls off into the sunset refusing to acknowledge his whiny attempts to suck her back into his emotional fuckwittery. She lives happily ever after and he - well, we frankly don't care what happens to him.

Am I wrong to derive a message of 'You shouldn't stand for being messed around by an idiot - dump him' from this whole thing and AIBU to think that's a pretty good message to enforce on teenagers (presumably the target audience)?

I don't know the song, but yes that is a great message.

I thought it was! She clearly thinks that it is not her fault he's an idiot and has no compunction in ditching him forever once she's sussed him out. Love it :)

Just watched this, very good!

I quite like the song but something about TS wrecks my head...

Here you go Nailak

I remember when we broke up the first time
Saying this is it, I've had enough, 'cause like
We haven't seen each other in a month
When you, said you, needed space, what?
Then you come around again and say
Baby, I miss you and I swear I'm gonna change
Trust me, remember how that lasted for a day
I say, I hate you, we break up, you call me, I love you

Oooh we called it off again last night
But Oooh, this time I'm telling you, I'm telling you
We are never ever ever getting back together
We are never ever ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends talk
To my friends talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together

Like ever...

I'm really gonna miss you picking fights
And me, falling for a screaming that I'm right
And you, will hide away and find your piece of mind with some indie record that's much cooler than mine

Oooh you called me up again tonight
But Oooh, this time I'm telling you, I'm telling you
We are never ever ever getting back together
We are never ever ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends talk
To my friends talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together

I used to think, that we, were forever ever ever
And I used to say never say never
Huh, he calls me up and he's like, I still love you
And i'm like, i'm just, I mean this is exhausting, you know
We are never getting back together, like ever

We are never ever ever getting back together
We are never ever ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends talk
To my friends talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together

We, oooh, oooh, not back together, we
Oh, getting back together

Shame 1D can't take a leaf from her book.

I'm pretty sure this song relates to one of her real life ex's too. Me and DD were trying to work out which one the other day Grin

YABU because although it is a good song with a good message, it is very catchy and it encourages people who are tone deaf to sing it loudly, in the car where there is no escape.

It is on the radio ALL the time and constantly in my head.

I do think it's a good choon though

Its a crappy song.

Also sounds like she's trying to convince herself to be honest.

Yanbu but this song is so-o irritating....plus which it ain't cool imo to write about people you've had relationships with... is nothing sacred?

A presenter on our local radio station played this down the phone to his ex girlfriend when they'd just broken up.
Not relevant, but thought I'd add my two pence.

YANBU. I really do like this song. I know it irritates a lot of people, but Taylor Swift is my guilty pleasure!

MissKeithLemon - apparently a number of songs on the album were written about Jake Gyllenhaal so suspect this one may be one of them.

I like it and I like her.

MUCH better than that crappy song that glorifies emotional abuse. The monster one - it is soooo catchy that I catch myself humming along in shops and then getting annoyed.

I think (but I could be wrong) that it's a remake - I bought it from iTunes last night and there are many different versions, including karaoke classics.

YANBU. I love Taylor Swift and I agree it's a good message not to let yourself be messed around.

Keith, this one is generally thought to be about jake gyllenhaal, as a lot of the ones on the album are (e.g. Red, state of grace, all too well...) and the next single Begin Again is most likely also about moving on from him.

iTunes always have versions like that. It's not a remake, people just cover them really quickly to try to make a bit of money on there because they get them released before the official version comes out.

EllenParsons · 27/10/2012 15:27

30 ish no it is not a remake! She wrote it when a friend of her ex came into the studio and made a comment like oh you guys are probably getting back together, then she went on a rant about it and the producer said we have to make this into a song! Karaoke versions will have been made already as she is so popular.

It's a shite song but I agree that it gives out a good message to teenagers. There's something about TS though that makes me think she's slightly needy and unhinged. She seems to write a song about every break up and boyfriend she's had, normally slagging them off. All a bit too public and undignified for me.

DD loves it and although I think she is a bit annoying, I really think it's a great message. Rather than the whining, obsessive, stalker crap peddled by others.

ha ha, surely if most lyricists thought like this then there would be no love songs written ever?! In fact, aren't most songs/books/art etc all a peep into the thoughts and mind of the artist Confused

Aah Worra, I loved Beautiful South. Brid town hall circa 1989 iirc. Fairground Attraction played too, I was soooo cool [hgrin]

ReindeerBOOOOllocks · 27/10/2012 16:21

Perfect ten by beautiful South was a great message.

But Taylor swifts message is also better than most pop stars lyrics.

I like the song but that's because 3yo DD sings never ever EVERRRRR when it comes on, and it's rather cute.
