Do you want your child to learn God Save the Queen at School?

Is it important for all children at school in Britain to learn the National Anthem no matter their country of origin? Would it help integration at all? Or simply be a good way of increasing a sense of patriotism? Is it important even though so many people don't believe in God and don't support a monarchy?
Are you happy for your child to learn it? Would you like a different National Anthem?

Are you being unreasonable what?

Petsinmyputridpudenda Fri 26-Oct-12 15:31:52

TheSkiingGardener Fri 26-Oct-12 15:31:54

Why, which paper wants to know?

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda Fri 26-Oct-12 15:32:09

If my husband has his way our baby will be born singing it and waving a Union Jack.

GoSakuramachi Fri 26-Oct-12 15:32:17

zippey Fri 26-Oct-12 15:32:51

Binkyridesagain Fri 26-Oct-12 15:33:41

How many words do you need for your article?

DuelingFanjo Fri 26-Oct-12 15:44:31

no, no, no, no, no, no.

does that cover it?

exoticfruits Fri 26-Oct-12 15:45:15

I can't see why they need it in school. Teach them yourself if you want them to know it.

pigletmania Fri 26-Oct-12 15:46:09

Yes because we live in The Uk of course, same if dc were going to school in anther country

pigletmania Fri 26-Oct-12 15:47:22

Oh it's her again, liketochat s a journo

ImAlpharius Fri 26-Oct-12 15:51:08

I like the Eddie Izzard version. That's what I'm teaching mine!

tittytittyhanghang Fri 26-Oct-12 15:51:17

no, if my dc have to learn anything then as a Scot, I rather they learnt Flower of Scotland.

theroseofwait Fri 26-Oct-12 15:51:30

Yes. I am British and proud of our Queen and heritage. As a family, we are also Christians, although I take the use of God to include gods of all faiths.

Some of us do exist and would like our children educated accordingly. I would be more appalled if they weren't taught it somewhere along the line, along with the really important bits of British history such as Kings and Queens and about the two world wars.

OwedToAutumn Fri 26-Oct-12 15:52:50

Ooh , what's the Eddie Izzard version?

(Do you have a flag? grin)

anklebitersmum Fri 26-Oct-12 15:58:37

Absolutely should be taught in all British schools. Absolutely.

<temporarily 'braces up' for Her Majesty and then 'falls out' to the right>

grin

bachsingingmum Fri 26-Oct-12 16:00:51

Yes! It's our national anthem. I was shock [sorry don't know how to put emoticons in] when one of our olympic gold medalists said that he hadn't wanted to learn it before his event in case that spiked his chances. I thought "surely everyone learns it at school". Apparently not. The lovely Gareth's next project?

bachsingingmum Fri 26-Oct-12 16:02:07

Oh - now I know. It does it for you when you type the words in the square brackets!

ClippedPhoenix Fri 26-Oct-12 16:02:23

As a royalist, yes of course.

ReallyTired Fri 26-Oct-12 16:03:04

I hope they teach the children to sing. Nothing's worse than Gawd Save our Queen hideously out of tune.

YouOldSlag Fri 26-Oct-12 16:06:24

I don't think learning a song is powerful enough to poison your mind, turn you into a Monarchist or turn you Christian, so, no, I don't mind them learning a National anthem.

I know my Welsh national anthem word for word, but I don't speak Welsh. Still learnt it and it hasn't harmed me or turned me into a Welsh Nationalist.

It's a song. It's not contagious.

My DH doesn't know Abide with me. He is 42. I hang my head in shame every cup final day sad.

OwedToAutumn Fri 26-Oct-12 16:09:04

Ooh, bachsingingmum. What a great name! What Bach do you sing?

(Got to be better than GSTQ, in any case. wink
