To cut my kids' hair to save £16?

I am not a hairdresser.
My kids prefer having their hair cut at home.
They don't look appalling - people don't point at them on the street (and when I tell people I have cut their hair, they generally look impressed rather than embarrassed).
But they've just had a proper barber's haircut and they do look better.

I'd prefer to keep the £16 every 4-5 weeks but am I going to scar them for life with bad hair? They're 7 and 8 BTW.

Save the money. I am have DD's and they get a £7 haircut once a year to their chin and it doesn't need cutting again til it's down their back. They are too young to care

Save the £16 somewhere else in the budget, buy clothes from a charity shop or jumble sale to save the money.they have their hair on all the time. a decent haircut makes a huge difference to appearance, whether you have a boy or a girl.

Depends on how old, my 5 yo DS yes but 10yo no, he wants style, sophistication and a 'proper' haircut! Toni & Guy do two for one kids on a Monday and Tuesday, so we get great two great haircuts for the price of one!

It depends on how you do it- my mother tried once and had to get a neighbour around to sort it out- it was a disaster- luckily it was my brother and not me!

If they prefer having it cut at home can't you find a mobile hairdresser? Mine's seriously good value.

as long as you don't use a bowl for a template.

i think you ought to be able to find a cheaper price than £16 for 2 kids.

I cut my boys hair and where I live the it's about £7 - £8 a haircut. They only have it cut one grade all over so it's not particulary difficult.
Wont cut DD's hair though, it's too long and thick. Tried to cut her fringe myself once. Never again.

I cut my ds's hair - it's about £8 a pop round here as well (probably cheaper if you have someone come to your house). I started when he was about 2 and really didn't care what he looked like / wasn't going to get teased and was very bad at it, but 4 years on I'm much better.

Actually after one cut one of my friends who used to take the piss (in a nice way) about me cutting it said "I see you've given in and taken him to the barber", which I was delighted by!

It isn't as good as a proper haircut obviously, and you notice it more when it starts to grow out. But no one points and laughs, so I'm carrying on until he cares more.

I did try to cut 3yo dd's hair in a straight line though and that did not go well. Surprisingly much harder than doing ds's. Think she might need to go to the hairdresser...

carocaro do you mind me asking how much toni and guy charge? I go there for mine which is £45 but have no idea what they charge for children? My DS needs a haircut

It's absolutely fine IMVHO to cut your childrens hair, especially at that age. I cut DD (4) hair (she has never been to a hairdresser) and DH's hair, and he cuts mine. (Tis only a trim for me and DD though, we have long hair, nothing complicated)

My friend, however, went and paid a fortune for her 1 yr old DS and received the lock of hair, a special photo and got made a fuss of etc. (was for her, not her son, clearly, he couldn't give as shit)

Each to their own. But YANBU at all - very sensible.

I'd say go a few times a year and supplement with home cuts between, if you're not happy carrying on DIY.

I've never taken my children to the hairdresser, although they're only 5 and 3. Dd has longish hair, no fringe, so easy to do at home, although ds's uneven mop isn't going to look cute for ever...

we bought a flowbee. DS (16) has had compliments on his flow bee hairstyle.

I cut my two DSs hair, they are 3.5yrs and 20 mths old.

Sometimes DS1's hair can look slightly wonky but I think that's endearing on a small child.

I take him to the hairdresser for special events, ie nursery photos or christenings, etc.

Otherwise I would prefer to save the £12 - £20 dependent on salon.

And tbh I think I do nearly as good a job on the children's hair as the professionals do!

Ooh just looked up flowbee...

Tell us more Hop. Is it worth getting one? And from where?

Thanks!

It is cutting blades hooked up to a vacuum with spacers. It sucks your hair up and cuts it then you trim around the edges. No good for long hair but with two DSs that wear theirs short and DH it has saved us a ton of money. 11 year old can do his if I trim afterwards.

We thought it was cheesy and stupid until a friend demonstrated theirs on DS.

I do DS's. First time, I told myself if he came out of it looking like the lad in "About a Boy", I'd pay, but he didn't so I'm still on DIY. I actually do a better job than some of the haircuts friends have paid for for their children. We will be stuck if he ever wants anything other than a short back and sides, though. (NB, I'm dead tight about hairdressing in general - I cut my own too).

I cut DD2's fringe.

DS goes to a barber who only charges a fiver for boys.

I cut my boys' hair. Until earlier this year when I thought they ought to have a "proper" haircut. Boy 2 was fine, but Boy 1 (aged 7) could not sit still, he cringed and wriggled and whined. I cannot take him back. I'll have to go through all the local barbers!

Nobody in this house pays for haircuts though, I cut husband's hair (with clippers) and I cut mine too.

We have clippers at home and I used to cut ex's hair and until recently DS's too.
In fact I cut better than most hairdressers, but not barbers.
Still, they did look good enough.
