My eldest dd is 8. Her teacher called me aside today to 'have a word'. Apparently a few of the children were talking at wet play time about how babies were made (my dd did not bring topic up). There were various theories. My daughter said they were made from seeds from a man joining with an egg from a woman to grow a baby. Perfectly reasonable I thought. She doesn't actually know about the sex bit yet as hasn't asked. I suspect she thinks the woman eats the eggs :0! But I would be quite happy to tell her at 8 if she asked, age appropriately of course.

Anyway the teacher called me aside and was acting shocked that my daughter had said this. She stood waiting from a reaction from me. I said that I thought at 8 this was a perfectly normal thing for dd to say. She thought not and asked me to tell my dd bit to mention it again as other parents might not like it!! I was a bit too shocked to say anything at the time but thinking about it now it's made me really cross. It's hardly like she was giving the class a sex lesson for goodness sake. AIBU?

YANBU and I am surprised that a teacher of children this age would be shocked by it either. IME many children of this age know it involves a seed and egg, some know the mechanics of it too. Is the teacher knew to working with children of this age?

Gosh my daughter this age knows all about penises and vaginas. She knew about egg and seed, but she asked how did the man dog get the seed in the right place. She then asked if it was the same for people which I confirmed. Oh yes she was 6 when we had this conversation.

YANBU. My DS is also 8yo. He told me the other month he thought woman were a bit like plants as they had the seeds and the man had to fertilize it to grow a baby.

I have no idea where he got it from but felt it was a great explanation from an 8yo and certainly I would explain the facts of life to an 8yo in a way he could understand.

Teacher is odd - my friends DD also 8 (different school) has done some sex ed lessons already.

The teacher is being totally ridiculous! My 5 and 6 year olds have known this for over a year. If she had said the fairies put the baby into mums belly button she'd have a point but your dd was factually correct.

Personally I'd have a word with the head teacher as there is no way I would be telling my child not to talk about this and I would be shocked at the thought that the teacher might.

Teacher is mad. My 8 year old knows more than that. He has asked, and I have told him in 8 yr old language. He knows what willies are for in relation to babies, and he knows about periods and eggs. I always think if he asks a question, I should answer it honestly.

It's a Catholic school. Teacher is used to the year group but a bit 'Miss Haversham'. Starting to wonder if she didn't know the eggs and the seeds bit herself!! Maybe she still thinks the stork brings babies.

At my primary school we had sex education at 8 years old. It involved a bit of sperm and egg stuff, some babies in sacks etc but mainly a naked woman giving birth screaming and a family with teenage-ish children playing volleyball in the nip.

Teacher is a loon. My 4 year old knows about seeds and eggs and that babies grow in tummies. He is not a deviant.

Crikey, well my daughter is 6 and after a recent 'the talk' thread on here I did in fact explain to my daughter exactly how babies are made and exactly how they come out again - I used a couple of brilliant explanations I read on MN - so thanks for that!

I was expecting some extra questioning and all I got was an "oh, really?!" and that was that!

So she can educate the whole KS1 playground now!

I do think the teacher was being very U.

DS1 is the same age and if the conversation came up with his friends ( which I doubt very much as they are boys) then he would probably start using the words "penis" "uterus" and "vagina". That would probably cause steam to come out of that teachers ears or something!

I'm a doctor and use proper words and have answered any questions factually about how the body works including reproduction.
