Leaving the oven on when you're out. IIU?

Fucksticks, crapbuckets and wankbadgers. My fucking slow cooker has died halfway through cooking tonight's dinner. (Slow roast lean pork shoulder with leeks, roast potatoes, stuffing and 907760 types of veg, all welcome, bring wine, I fucking need it). Got home from the park to find it riggweltered and pork half raw. Fuck.

My problem - DD has Taekwondo from 6 till 7 in next village. DH works till 5 in city, trains home, drives from train station to meet me there at 6.20, he stays till end, toddler and I go home, finish cooking dinner, DH and DD get home at 7.15, we eat.

I now have the pork shoulder on a lowish heat in the oven but if I turn it off when we leave, it won't be cooked. I have this idea that leaving the oven on when you're out is the height of irresponsibility, but IS IT, or am I just weird? I'm really afraid of house fires and my mate's house burned down six weeks ago so I might be irrational. What do you do?

Am aware this is incredibly minorin the scheme of things, but wibble.

I don't have a problem with it. My oven can even be set automatically to switch itself on when you are out to cook for when you are back so I suppose they wouldn't put that facility on if it wasn't safe

My DH won't let me do this he is paranoid. I also spend a lot of time with firefighters (lucky me) and they would tell you that you are mad. I have seen some scary pictures.

I leave the oven on when we go to church every Sunday otherwise we wouldn't have lunch until mid afternoon.
It's on a lowish heat and I've never had a mishap.
I don't know though, if you're not comfortable doing it maybe best not.

I would, leave it on low to carry on slow cooking. I don't have a slow cooker so use my oven this way all the time.

But I am reckless and put the tumble drier on as I leave for work.

I can tell mine to turn itself off after a certain time so I use that if we go out and leave it on

That way if we get held up for any reason I don't have to worry.

If it did not have this I don't think I would do it, sorry

My friend left her oven on all day by accident once and it was fine. I'd be too scred too though!

I wouldn't. I used to work for the fire service so have had the fear of God put into me about these things.

So, I did what I always do when I'm flapping, I rang mumsy. She said do it. (she also laughed at me). So we are at TKD and the oven is on bites nails.

i was shocked when a friend (it was a while ago. i had friends in those days) left her gas fire on low when she went out. she laughed at me. she said 'it's a gas fire. it doesn't know if i'm in, or out!' which i thought was a fairly good point.

We don't have a slow cooker and regularly (ie most Sundays when we have a roast) put the oven on a low heat, bung in the roast, go and walk the dog / collect ds from underwater hockey training and come home to a lovely smelling dinner. We have always done it, don't think much of it tbh

It will be fine. We do it regularly so we can eat as soon as kids get in. And if it does catch fire, surely better that you're out?

I (and my family/friends I'm likely to eat Sunday dinner with), do this/ have always done this. I don't see the issue tbh, unless you can't be sure when you will be home, or have a particularly old/dodgy oven. I have never in my life had to 'intervene' with an oven when it is on for a normal amount of time, so the chances of needing to do so in the small amount of time I'm out and it's on is minuscule.

If the house is going to burn down better it does when I'm out.

Oh. I also leave the oven drying things overnight and run the tumble dryer and the dish washer. I'm going to kill us all aren't I? Oh well.

having the oven on low is absolutely no different to having a slow cooker on you know!

my gran was slow cooking things long before "slow cookers" were on the market, its called putting it in a very low oven in a morning and going out for the day!

I leave the oven on to slow cook ribs, pork joints, etc but it is an electric one so i dont feel so bad about it. It has a timer to set it to come on and off when you want it to. I also go out with the washing machine and dishwasher on which you probably arent supposed to do either
