If you are O- and able to walk in into one our sessions this weekend please do so. O- is the universal blood group that can be given to anyone. I'm A- though.

But you have reminded me to contact the Blood Donor people again as they used to ring me to invite me to give blood, but stopped when I told them I was pregnant. DD is now 2. I could have donated loads of times since then.

I saw this appeal on Twitter and rang the Heath hospital. I asked if they needed my type of O blood, I was told that they don't need O type blood and don't know where the rumour started from.

I don't think it's the hospital which supplies blood. It's the blood service. The reception at Heath wouldn't know.

The Heath Hospital have issued an official statement stating they do not need O-type blood donations urgently. However I'm sure they would gratefully have them.

This thread has brought to my attention that I don't know my own blood type. How have I managed to get to my age not knowing that.

I phoned the blood transfusion people ( can't remember the correct name) and there was no reply. Just to be on the safe side I will try again in the morning.

Audrina- there has been a terrible event in Cardiff today, that much is true. A man in a white van went on a rampage,running people over. 1 dead,11 injured. Just shocking. Things like this don't happen in Cardiff :(

Sadly one person has been killed and 12 injured. 7 of whom are children.

I don't know if the call for blood relates to the people in the hospital but it makes you think what the blood service has to do in emergencies. Sorry, there are other threads about the incident on MN and on the news websites.

As I say, they don't make money out of this. No scam. What can be the harm in raising awareness of the need for blood.

They will always need O- blood - and indeed all blood.

This type of tragedy can make people more aware, which has to be a good thing.

Personally I believe the expectation should be that all adults who are able to should donate blood - it should be the expected norm. Because none of us know when we might need some.

My thoughts are with the families of those who died, and with those who have been injured. It seems such a bizarre event.

I'm B+, but sadly not in the country. My blood is not acceptable here either. Apparently, I have Vcjd it's not even a query.
I have read that the blood donation plea is a hoax, but agree that whatever gets people donating is a good thing.

If you look at the blood stocks on the website O Neg stocks are very low - they literally only have enough nationwide for four days, and these are "average" days and don't allow for massive incidents.

They have eight days of O Pos. Which is about normal - but then there are more O Pos donors so the stocks get topped up regularly.

My DH is O Neg - he has been called in at short notice for years. I'm O Pos - common but still useful! He has contacted the service to find out when he should go in.

He is in the Army - he's even been pulled in whilst in Iraq and Afghanistan as the supplies for the wounded dropped and there was a delay on replenishments. He has saved lives, as all donors do.

Anyone who can, should, emergency or not. You never know when you or your loved ones might be the ones needing it.

I'd love to give blood, but I've had sex in sub-Saharan Africa. So - despite having tested negative for HIV several times since I came back to the UK permanently over a decade ago - I'm still persona non grata to the blood banks.

Hopkinette, nobody wants my blood either. The UK service turned me away because they could never get a full pint out of me. The US turned me away because I've lived in Britain too long.

I would love to, but I'm a recipient of egg donation so there is a tiny tiny risk of the vCJD cells being transferred. Plus I've been a recipient of a transfusion after I had DD.

However, because I've read this thread, I will nag ask DP in the morning to go and give blood for me

My mum has given blood from 1975ish. She got a badge a while back when she reached 100 pints.
