In reply to 'cyclists having a deathwish'. All these things have happened this week, no wonder we're an angry bunch! I cycle everyday to work and drop DS (18mo) off at nursery on the way

  • IF I INDICATE RIGHT, DO NOT THEN OVERTAKE ME ON MY RIGHT HAND SIDE! thanks. If one more person overtakes me on my right hand side when i've indicated, i will purposefully fall off my bike and claim then knocked me off and sue them

  • A cycle lane is for me to cycle in, not for you to park.

  • a woman doing her make up in her mirror at 7:30am drove through a red light, when me and DS were trying to cross the road at the green man and clipped our back wheel, sending us flying. He is fine, thanks to a helmet. (cycle on the pavement at busy times when I have DS and pavements are empty)

  • If you insist on driving your little darlings to school in a fucking ridiculous 4x4, it's not my problem to make way for you and you should drive behind me sensibly until it's safe to overtake and not drive me into the pavement

  • When there are road works blocking half the road, i am infront of you and have right of way. I shouldn't have to stop and wait for their to be a gap so I can overtake roadworks, you go after me and don't try and run me over

-Me and DS always have helmets and lights on. BUT if i have cycled by myself to the gym in the evening, i may not have a highvis jacket on or lights because I was expecting it to be dark. You're issue, i'm going down a road with fucking lights everywhere, it's not an excuse not to see me. I shouldn't have to paint mysef flurouscent just because you're distracted.

  • Crossroads? Deathroads. I have to wait for a car going the way i'm going to cycle alongside and guide me across safely, or i would be pummeled.

-If you are on your phone. text/talking, you deserve to be shot.

  • Mostly, I am on a bike. You are on your ass in a car. I am cold. It is usually wet too. I have a baby on my bike. GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK AND LET ME CYCLE!

  • If you ever shout at me out the window for being a good human being and not poluting the planet and excercising, unlike you lazy bastards in cars, then i will remember you. Just because you can drive off afterwards, doesn't mean you get the last word.

I can't even explain my fury, I am so angry at the other thread. i'm sure i've missed some off.

Yep, taking a dive in a car would be particularly silly.

I'd dive in a wetsuit personally but each to their own.

Agree - a dive in a car would be ridiculous

Yep, I agree, diving cars would be a bit idiotic.

Driving them, less so.

fortyplus · 19/10/2012 14:28

Oh... and of course all cyclists are perfectly reasonable human beings and all car drivers (maybe 90% of the adult population) are total tossers.

Speaking as a pedestrian, I find drivers and cyclists compete to put us at risk. Then again, some pedestrians have a death wish. No one road user group has a monopoly on fuckwittery. Or generalisations.

erm...does that mean everyone who drives is an idiot?

I think you've gone way off here

but I haven't seen the other thread.

Fwiw I grew up in a family of militant cyclists

I now drive, cycle and ride a motorbike and tbh there are idiots in all of these categories.

It's nobody's business but your own whether you wear a helmet or not.

YANBU I nearly got hit by a 4 x 4 mounting the pavement when I was running yesterday. Stupid driver wanted to park on it and couldn't wait til I was past. No cyclists have ever done that to me. Also had some pyschopath old git deliberately nearly hitting me as I was running through a corner shop car park. Confronted him and he said I should have been wearing hi-viz. I pointed out it was a shop car park full of pedestrians, none in high viz. Strangely, I noticed he had missing front teeth. I may have called him a gap-toothed cretin...sorry, I digress!

Sorry but if you don't wear lights and/or a high vis jacket then most drivers can't see you, nothing to do with being "distracted", you are bloody invisible!

Not really true tbh, not in an urban area with street lighting anyway.

You shouldn't dive with a car. A submarine is much better.

mumnosbest · 19/10/2012 14:30

waste of a good car :)
but seriously you fo need lights when you go to the gym in the dark.

Report
jam17 · 19/10/2012 14:30

wait no sorry, not all. on monday, one guy let me turn off without out nearly killing me. That was nice of him. Other than that, based on this week, all car drivers in the center of manchester should be banned.

Well I'm sorry you just lost any support I could have given you. I am both a cyclist and a car driver. I have to be. My issue on the other thread (which I haven't checked today) was that I need to be able to see YOU as well as you can see ME, there are some shite cyclists and some idiotic car drivers arounf. No one is perfect but if you cycle on main roads in poor light or poor wethare conditions I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SEE YOU

Right, now I have made myself feel better have a Biscuit and I'll go back to work, on my bike with highvis, helmet and LIGHTS

come on ladies give jam a break, most drivers/ divers are responsible but some are total prats, cycling can be hazardous and i do sympathize with your problems but why do some cyclists think that they have the devine right to ride on the pavement? sorry but i refuse to give way to a prat riding on the pavement, and no i won't step aside for you under any circumstances , if you are nervous about cycling on the road don't cycle at all.

Report
Spatsky · 19/10/2012 14:31

If you are cycling in the dark in dark clothes without lights then you are athe problem as you are invisible, seriously, someone doesn't have to be distracted not to see you because you can not actually be seen.

The rest, all fair enough.

Our local council is currently experimenting with turning street lights off - so don;t be too sure that they are always available in urban areas.

jam, I feel your pain. Its ridiculous that people can't be civilized enough to just WAIT for literally nanoseconds in order to be polite. Because they are in a car, they somehow have more rights.

You know they are just like these big corporations, they are following the law so who cares if they are acting like shits?

I do also drive, but I am always aware of cyclists. Too many people I know have been killed cycling, all on driver error, nothing the cyclist did to cause the tragedy.

sixlostmonkeys · 19/10/2012 14:33

You have gone through all this yet still deem it OK to share roads with cars?? ah well

Report
PuffPants · 19/10/2012 14:33

YABU.

Proportionally, there are far more cyclists flouting the rules of the road than motorists.
