I suppose they have to be transported to slaughterhouse but also think sadly they don't always go to the most local slaughter house but to the cheapest one they can negotiate.

As I remember it they used to be slaughtered abroad, but some european regulation prevented it - I think it was something to do with the French farmers getting upset about something, but I was a teenager at the time with very right wing farming parents, so my recollection may not be perfect....

Isn't meat labelled from where the animal is slaughtered as opposed to where it lived. So killing it on british soil would mean they could label it british lamb/ beef etc.

Live export is disgusting! Fair enough animals have to be transported to slaughter houses but they shouldn't have to endure hours upon hours loaded into lorries to suffer.

Most British farmers would agree with you - I have never met one (and I've met lots) who didn't really care about the welfare of their animals. It is a fight which needs to go a long way though, and at a time when the European economy is going to collapse, I can't see the politicians in Europe giving a shit about the welfare of farm animals.

I think there is a general disparaging air about how much the Brits love their pets....

TBH they are fresher if they are transported live I would imagine there would be a load of restrictions on transporting meat to stay fresh and within regulations, I actually hate seeing lorries ont he mtorway and see cow eyes staring out but they have to be transported to get where they need to be
