AIBU?

Are they being fed enough? (cats) if not, what should i do?

Firstly, I haven't got cats so i'm not clued up on feeding them etc.

Last week we were asked to feed neighbours cats while they were away on holiday. They are lovely friendly cats. But, they always seem starving and regularly go round all the local houses to basically in a cats way beg for food, or go into other people's houses via cat flaps and help themselves!

Anyway, I was asked to give them half a tin each, once a day, with some cat biscuits (there are three of them).

I don't know anything about cats, but this seems like a small amount and not enough to me. Maybe it's not...that's why i'm asking you lot.

But, if this isn't enough, what do i do? should i say something to the neighbours about the amount of food they are feeding them?

My cats used to have food down pretty much all the time, but would still go scrounging for food.

My cats get a third of a tin each split over two meals plus biscuits available all the time. Half a tin and biscuits a day sounds fine to me.

My cats would tell you they were starving, even while eating fresh salmon and cream and licking their lips.

Also see the ginger on my profile - he's definitely not underfed!

Cats are quite small animals really, an average cat only weighs about 4-5kg. I would say half a tin plus biscuits is fine.

When my cat was killed in July we found out (from people coming to the house to commiserate) that despite being fed an ample amount of good, he was also taking meals at and regularly gracing the soft cushions of SIX other local households.

Cats are slags.

They sound fine!!

Completely normal amount.

I'm having an ongoing battle with my mum at the moment as she is convinced I am starving my cat as when she visits it acts as if it's starving. She childminds/babysits occasionally and will give it 5 or 6 sachets telling me she 'had to' the poor animal was starving.

He's just a devious asshole who eats like a king when she's there and then shits and vomits all over my house when she's gone.

My cat carries on as if we're starving her, she'd go begging at the neighbours too if she wasn't too lazy to leave our garden, and she's definately not under fed. She's getting a bit of a spare tyre now her days are spent lolling on sunny window sills instead of being out patrolling the neighbourhood

She has half a tin of meat in the morning, with a bowl of dry throughout the day

Grin I'm laughing at some of your comments. Thanks so much for your replies. I was worried about them, but now know there's nothing to worry about.

My cat also has half a tin or food along with dry food. She will also hang around the toddlers high chair and await anything dropped by him morning noon and night. She is worse than the dog!!

We have also been awoken by her dragging cat treats down off the side and attacking the bag until she gets them opened during the night, too.

Honestly, if you gave the cat more, they will still go begging and eating too much won't be good for them.

Ours will easily eat 2 or 3 pouches each, per day plus biscuits.

The curry delivery guy who apparently lives 3 streets away just greeted our cat and says she eats at his house too..........

Our cats get biscuits for breakfast and supper, a quarter of a tin for tea. That's plenty according to the vet.

The big cat whores himself around the neighbours though. He'd do that no matter how much food we give him.

We have one fussy cat and one fat cat. Needless to say fat cat eats all his own and most of fussycats food Hmm

In fact there is no limit to the amount of food he would eat. If given more he will eat it, puke it up and yowl again.

Don't overfeed them unless you want to clear up puke [bitter].

Mine also manage to eat a fair few mice, rats and baby birds [sob]

Yes, I think one of mine must have found a neighbour who caves at her cute little face.

She is a big girl, she lolls on the furniture and looks like a cross between bagpuss and garfield. Body is like a little barrel with these little short legs. Looks like a big furry cushion. Nothing delicate about her. But she is luvverly, and out of the 3 adores my 3yr old DD, infact she is waiting outside her bedroom door til she wakes to go and say Good Morning.

Just for that, she is forgiven anything.

I love this AIBU Grin

Cats are the leading experts on telling you they are starving.

You feed them when you get up at 7am, DP comes downstairs at 7.15 and it's "oh thank god you're here I'm STARVING she is so mean and hasn't fed me for EVER. Feed me feed Me feed me now!"
