99% of people interviewed at motorway service stations toilets claimed they had washed their hands after going to the toilet. Electronic recording devices revealed only 32% of men and 64% of women actually did.

Why is it so difficult to use a bit of soap and water for the sake of keeping poo
out of our food?

Ugh!

Reeeevolting ! A friend of mine became very very ill with hepatitis after eating in a place in London where she went to Uni .. It works out whoever prepared her food had gone for a poo and not washed their hands ~ she was ill for MONTHS

How hard can it be ?

I notice more women done it than men! now there's a surprise Hmm
But yabu it is disgusting and that's how tummy bugs are passed around so easy!
If one person doesn't wash their hands then touches the door handle the next person who has wash their hands may well have not bothered.

Urgh! Totally disgusting! I don't understand people who don't wash their hands. Confused I mean your hands stink when you've done a fucking shit FGS!

I've never understood the problem with hand washing. It's not a conscious decision for me, it just happens. My children shout "That woman didn't wash her hands!" when they see it happen. It makes me ever so proud Grin.

I do not wash my hands in public places as you only have to touch the main door to get out and then get all the germs straight back on them.

I use antibacterial hand wash stuff which I keep in my bag when I have walked out. Most of my friends do this too.

An electronic recording device would not pick this up.

Report
ShatnersBassoon · 15/10/2012 13:16

I still wash my hands though, even if I know I'll want to apply antibacterial gel because of the door handle that is inevitably contaminated by lazy bastards. I like to lead by example, and I wouldn't want anyone to think I was manky by just walking out.

WOW - they use electronic recording devices to monitor people in public toilets? just wow!

Report
controlpantsandgladrags · 15/10/2012 13:19

I also use antibac handgel once I go out of the main door to the toilets. If you wash when you come put of the cubicle you essentially re-germ your hands when you turn off the tap and open the door to get out!

Having spent many years working with drug addicts there are many public loos where I will not wash my hands!

Report
MrsKeithRichards · 15/10/2012 13:22

Why not word?

FunnysInLaJardin · 15/10/2012 13:23

yuck yuck. I am becoming a stickler for hand washing since DS1 and DH both got worms. Vile vile vile

Report
wordfactory · 15/10/2012 13:24

Many drug addicts rinse needles after they've used them, in toilet sinks.

I wouldn't think service stations are a big issue but other places - train stations etc are a big no no for me.

Waste of time washing your hands if others haven't, and there's a door rather than a chicane IYSWIM, or if there isn't a proper drier/paper towels.

Someone else's bum germs on your warm, wet hands ...

99% might have washed, but if they touched the same damp handle as the 1% they might as well not have bothered.

MadgeHarvey · 15/10/2012 13:27

Since I tend to use paper rather than my hands for wiping and never touch the actual toilet I'm pretty meh about all this frantic handwashing. You'll come into contact with far far worse on all the zillion other surfaces you touch all day long not to mention the crowds of sneezing, snotting and coughing walking dead you pass everywhere.
And no - I never get sick. Grin

Report
MrsKeithRichards · 15/10/2012 13:32

Madge that's rank! It's pretty simple, you touch your arse you wipe your hands.

When, of a day, do you wash your hands?

Report
MrsKeithRichards · 15/10/2012 13:33

And how do you flush the loo? With your foot?!

Report
marbleslost · 15/10/2012 13:35

I just think handwashing is a normal part of life. The more you wash your hands, the less likely you are to pick up the germs from surfaces and door handles. If you don't wash your hands after visiting the loo, it's you that's putting the germs on the door handle for everyone else to pick up. Certainly wouldn't want to eat any food prepared by a non hand washer. Yuk.

YANBU

ShatnersBassoon · 15/10/2012 13:37

Madge, you surely must know that handwashing is important. Should doctors wash their hands before they examine patients? Should children wash their hands after wiping their bums and returning to a classroom full of shared equipment? The teachers who might touch 30 children every day? Dinner ladies, who might open 60 packages of food in one lunch sitting?

Report
MrsKeithRichards · 15/10/2012 13:37

That's kind of what I'm getting at, doing it after the loo is the most natural time to do it, and before cooking. If you're not doing it after the loo when are you?

I'm with you Madge. Yes I wash if I've been for a shit but not every time after a wee. I don't wee on my hands! I do wash them before cooking etc. Also never sick!

And how do your hands stink after you've had a poo?? Don't get that. Unless you've had a flimsy toilet roll disaster.

Report
MadgeHarvey · 15/10/2012 13:51

Oh for heavens sake! Grin I do not shit lavishly in public loos - ever. I have a piss, suspended over the loo and wipe with paper. At no point do I ever plunge my hands into my pissy fanjo! Yes, I flush the loo but if the flusher was smeared in shite I probably wouldn't! So if I wasted time doing the whole "Look at me! I'm soooooooooo fucking hygienic" hand wash thing and then touched any other surface again, ever, I'd be right back at square one! Honestly people - get a grip! There are far more yukky things out there than a bit of perceived piss vapour! I saw a kid wipe a big snotty booger on the escalator handrail the other day in Marks - ten more minutes and that was on the hands of every poor fucker who didn't see it!

Report
wordfactory · 15/10/2012 14:01

marble handwashing is a normal part of life.

But many public loos are the last place I would do it.
