so yesterday I came across this video on youtube
It was posted a few weeks ago by a 15 year old Canadian girl. In it she tells her story via a series of handwritten notes. To summarise at the age of 12 she was pressured by a man to flash her breasts over a webcam. 1 year later he contacted her threatening to distribute the picture of her breasts to all her friends if she didn't 'put on a show' for him. She refused, and he carried out his threat. He knew her name, address, school, the names of her friends and family.
Her schoolmates turned on her and began to bully her, the bullying became so severe she moved cities and started at a new school. The man repeated and again she found herself bullied, she moved again and again he stalked her to her new home and circulated her picture. She became depressed, and suffered from anxiety. She made two attempts at suicide. People just mocked her and told her she should try again and hopefully succeed. She was beaten up at school. The man posted a facebook group of her with her breasts as the cover photo.
She committed suicide last Wednesday. And still people post that she was a whore and a slut. She deserved to die. She should have been in prison because she made child pornography?!
AIBU to think that this girl was a victim of a child abuser. She should not have been blamed for what happened to her. I don't expect a child to have perfect judgement, and to be honest, many adults have made far worse mistakes with far less severe consequences. The one to blame is the man who targeted her and then stalked her. AIBU to think no one deserves the kind of treatment she was subjected to?

It's horrendous. I watched it over the weekend with both DDs (14 and 16) more than anything to be clear about what a mess t'inters and cyber bullying can make of your life; they find my "anything that goes online is potentially there forever and can/will be used against you" a tad old fashioned, apparently. Also because DD1 has a friend who is getting this type of 'kill yourself' shit on FB and Tumblr/whatever other sites the kidz are using today. And because DD1 was refusing to see that it required reporting to the police.
It's being talked about a great deal, which raises awareness... and that's the only positive I can find in the entire situation 
That's really choked me. Poor girl.
You watch that and want to give her a hug, and its such a fucking mindless waste.
Makes you wonder if the net is really worth the bother doesn't it? Bullying was bad when I was teen but at least we didn't have the types of things like Youtube etc they have now, instant and widespread bullying in a matter of minutes.
Think that should be shown in every school, everywhere.
You know, at the advanced age of 35, I give thanks regularly for the internet not being around when I was in my mid-teens. I had raging hormones (read: was boy mad), had poor impulse control and was all about risk taking. I honestly shudder to think what would be in the cyber-space ether about me now 
Trouble is both my DDs view my opinion as something slightly quaint and archaic. They really don't seem to get that stuff you might think is all well and amusing now may be less so in 5/10/20/whatever years time when your DP/boss/kids come across it. I'm vigilant about monitoring internet usage but I also know that when I was 15 I would have been more than capable of running 2 FB accounts - one that my parents saw and one that they knew nothing about...
My DM is also thankful that FB etc didn't exist. She reminds me of this regularly
