Dp is a heavy drinker and recently started having various symptoms that are all linking together and looking at being signs of alcohol damage the most recent of which is acetone smelling breath which more people than just me have noticed.

Now diabetes runs in his family and that's how we've all convinced him to get checked over but really we all believe its the drink that's doing it as all the diabetics were diagnosed as children, and are secretly hoping this gives him a fright to cut down (because nothing else has worked) and hope that whatever it is is reversible.

Aibu to hope this?

If so, dsis was saying for years that this smell on her was linked to diabetes - but we found out a month ago she is 9 years alcohol dependent

acetone breath is caused by ketones in the blood stream, if his liver is struggling then it could be that they are not being broken down. Is it acetone (pear drops) or just the stale alcohol smell that lingers on folk that drink too much?

Is he aware he has a problem with alcohol? I have recently stopped (seriously cut down) the amount of alcohol i drink (was doing a bottle of wine most nights) and i feel so much better in myself. Now i don't know if i had a "drink problem" but it wasn't doing me any good. I as shocked at how better i felt, how quickly. I do still drink in fact i have wine just now, but now its a bottle of wine a week (or half a bottle as i share with DP) if i can be bothered.

zombie it's definitely not "stale" smell, I know what you mean by that, he's never smelled of drink the following day unless he's had a heavy session the night before. This is something that's only started recently and is now his breath smell whether he's had a drink (so morning to mid afternoon) or not. If that makes any sense to you

Does he have any other symptoms? He needs a full blood work up i would think.

He's generally very run down, tired, joints are aching, relies on a drink to get to sleep then wakes at 3am as he can't stay asleep, he looks fucked to be fair I know that's not a symptom but still...

Actually if it is alcohol then that is worse isn't it?
I have seen some tragic loss due to alcohol abuse and it was irreversible. At least other things are managable?

Sorry off topic this is about the OP partner but my step dad smells of peardrops I am always confused about it, but he is a heavy drinker not so much now but in the past, I wonder if he has something wrong now because of the drinking, not that he would go to a doctor in a million years

Op, i think u should hv a private word with the gp bfr he goed yo see him, maybe by phone.

Theres no reason for a gp to suspect alcohol poisoning effects if he doesnt know someone has an alcohol problem.

Um! am I the only person to say type 2 diabetes, or am I being thick here? alcohol can do this, as it masks the signs, lowers blood sugars so high sugar diet can be masked, was a age old cheat for type 2 diabetics, until the 3 month average blood test came in.
but the pear drop smell is the give away, alcohol is the red herring

If it's ketones and it's the liver breaking down, it's got to be more than 85% damaged/broken down before it's irreparable - so try not to worry too much.

Dsis is in the road to recovery. It's a long road and she'll NEVER be able to drink alcohol again - but it's the right direction.

The diabetes is how we've convinced him to go. If its diabetes he will need to cut the drink, if its the drink then he's had a wake up call. Either way he needs seeing.

He drinks a bottle of wine plus 3 cans of strongbow a night from when he gets in from work to bedtime

We have an alcoholic in the family with Type II diabetes - he's on over 10 types of oral medication a day. He has been told that if he'd stop drinking his diabetes would be manageable by diet alone... he still drinks.

Will he admit to the doctor how much he's drinking? Because if not it might not help at all. Would he be happy for you to go with him?
