AIBU?

To be furious more people to care about Badgers than keeping Children safe?

Sick of my consistent moaning about how soft the law was on pedophiles I set up an online petition. I have 30+ friends on my fb (most parents) and was confident it would snowball and grow, however its like getting blood out a stone trying to get them to sign and share it. When I look on epetitions though a petition to save badgers is consistenly gaining signatures. I agree in animal rights, but not as a priority over children. Any advice as to boost the petition would be great xx

It's not either/or, is it?

Shall I save a child or a badger? Hmm

Maybe they don't care more about badgers than children. Maybe they think that sentencing is not the answer to keeping children safe.

What do you mean about the law being soft on paedophiles? Can you explain?

halloweeneyqueeney · 08/10/2012 16:35

you are allowed to sign as many as you like
people could sign the badger one and yours if they liked
I don't know how yours is worded, I might choose not to sign it but that doesn't mean that I don't care about children FFS, it might say something stupid and impractical and impossible like "lets get rid of all paedophiles for good" - easy peasy Hmm

Maybe the badger petition is not factually inaccurate, full of spelling mistakes and sound as if it's been written by a loon?

Just a thought.

No, its no either or, just wonder where they find so many people to sign a petition about badgers.

I think most people would prefer pedophiles to be locked up rather than in the communities??

I have looked at your petition and would ask you to consider running it through the spellchecker

To put it kindly; you might get more signatures if you ask someone to proof-read your petition.

So you are saying they are given a custodial sentence but then don't serve it?

I've looked at it

OP what percentage re-offend?

it's very simplistic, we'ld all like paedophiles locked up for life, and murderers locked up for life (real life not just "life sentance" life) etc etc but you need to understand WHY these sentances are not practicible in order to suggest an action that would facilitate them

for e.g. are you asking for more prisons to be build? what are you suggesting

its not really thought out is it? I don't see the point in signing it

the badger ones are generally well researched and actually have stats on alternative measures (like vaccinations) vs the success of culling and costs and all sorts

And the badger cull is national news?

Report
hazeldog · 08/10/2012 16:41

I believe that in this country we already lock up paedophiles. There's no simple answer to the problem. In the case of badgers we know culling dosent work and that intensive farming practices are at fault. Its a much simpler issue. For my two cents worth e petitions achieve nothing except to make people feel like they have done something. Then a lifetime of spam email follows. Do you really imagine that the powers that be will see a lazy, Ill thought out bit of reactionary clictivism and suddenly paedophilia will cease to happen?

Your petition is badly worded, badly spelt, doesn't give an 'answer', is inaccurate but more importantly - CANNOT become law.

The Anti-Badger Cull petition was simple - here are the facts, stop the cull based on these facts, here is an alternative answer. People could then support it or not - most people could see the science, could see the solution and supported it for that reason.

Your petition is not based on fact, doesn't actually say what you want, doesn't give an alternative and doesn't give a solution. People won't sign something like that, sorry.

Personally, I don't tend to sign e-petitions full stop as they generally achieve nothing.

However, if I were to sign one, I'd want it to be one that asks for something very specific ; appears to be thought through & demonstrates decent spelling & punctuation. I haven't had a look at yours as your opening post doesn't fit those criteria & your tone doesn't strike me as particularly reasoned.

are there, for example, treatment programs that have more sucess than others?, are there forms of supervision with better sucess rates?, do you know the success/failure rates of any of these things?

you sound like opposition government, it's easy to point at what's wrong, its a lot harder to make constructive, practicible suggestions about how to make it better

I think the logical problem there is that this would mean every sex offender would be locked up for life. Clearly that would require a huge investment in more prison places. And if every sex offender gets life, then what's to stop someone ''progressing' on to ever more horrific crimes? Eg the man who has rape fantasies but currently limits his offending to looking at images of abuse online, might think if he's going to get life for that, he might as well rape. How do you differentiate severity if everyone gets life? And how do you define a paedophiles? Is it an 18 year old boy who has sex with a 14 year old girl? How about a 60 year old man who has sex with a 14 year old?

what did the badger petition say? TBH your petition was rather general

Ugh my eyes hurt looking at that amount of errors.

I might start an epetition to stop stupid people starting epetitions. Can everyone pleeeeeeeeassse sign it?

Report

Proof reading is about more than spelling. Apart from your spelling, your petition isn't clear enough to attract many signatures in my opinion.
