AIBU?

AIBU to think it's really stupid and pointless when people lie about their age

I just got a automatic reminder of a friends birthday that said "Annabel is 30 today" but the thing is she's not she's 33. She also claims to be 3 years younger on her facebook and her husband even wrote Happy 30th on her page Grin The thing is her facebook is full of old school friends including me so it's not like we don't know.

AIBU to not really understand why people do this?

Disclaimer: This is meant to be light hearted after all the terrible news at the moment.

Well it is kind of pointless of her, but I changed my dob on Facebook when I turned cough33cough. It made me feel better when I was struggling with getting older.

I haven't put the correct date of birth on Facebook cos I am a scaredy cat about ID theft.

However, it doesn't worry me as I am 21! Wink

I was 39 for many years (a decade) until it has become too obvious I am NOT 39! So YANBU and are in fact wise. It is pointless. But that reality won't stop anyone :)

I am wondering if her DH actually knows her real age or if he's in on it too. Grin

If you were at school with her, why don't you just post "No you're not, you're 33".

Wow Sock - you look amazing for 134!

You might have something there - I am going to pretend I am 60 and then finally everyone will think I look "good for my age".

Because she's really lovely and after her DH posted a Happy 30th I don't know if he knows or not Blush

I'm actually 152 but only look about 46 so I think I can get away with it.

Her dh may not know. At my aunt's funeral, we were in the car when her son said that it was such a shame she had died at only fifty. Everyone else gloomily agreed until my mum piped up - but she was actually 56!

We did laugh and it helped us as it was such a her thing to do, and she kept her secret till the end. Perhaps if my mum hadn't spoken without thinking she would never have been found out!

It's the fact that her DH has added a Happy 30th message. Also the other birthday reminder I received was the same and not from facebook!

I have just turned 30 and have decided that I am no longer going to tell anyone my age (not lie, just not tell)! I wonder how long I'l last?!

I'm about 80 on FB; never put my real details on stuff like that Grin

Would be weird if her husband doesn't know though. How old is he?

But a birthday reminder app solely for entered your birthday out of choice, why put the wrong year?

Her husband is a little bit older than her I think.

You wait until you are 'older'. People think that you are fit only for sitting round a television in a rest home so I do not reveal my true age.

We do not hide our ages willingly. I took up hangliding when I was 50. I've canoed down the Orinoco and trekked through Borneo since then. I wingwalked when I was 70 45 so your friend is being a bit early in hiding her age. What's the matter with you all? You have a long life ahead of you so make the most of it while you have the chance.

Ranulph Fiennes is 68 something and is trekking across Antarctica soon. You can do the same NOW or a bit later whenthe little ones have grown up.

Oh so what if she's really lovely. She's being a bit of a numpty to lie about her age. I couldn't tolerate someone so stupid amongst my friends.

Age is a movable feast... I have been 30 now for 15 years..

Mintyy · 03/10/2012 20:21

Seriously. It is beyond twattish to lie about your age. Really it is.

BenandBolly · 03/10/2012 20:21

But IS Ralph Fiennes really 68? He might only be 40 and bragging how fit he is Grin

But he might be ageist or something, wouldn't want to cause any fuss especially on her 33 big 30th birthday Wink

Yeah, I never understand why anyone would do this. It doesn't change who you are or whether you're interesting/clever/attractive/accomplished/funny/whatever. And if you tell me you're 30 when you're really 40, I'm only going to think 'Wow, she looks quite old for her age.'

We didn't know how old my nan was until she turned 80! she had kept it secret from everyone for years. My mum sneaked a look at her passport and threw her a big party. She was Shock then Wine She's 93 now but if you ask her how old she is she says "65"
