to be a little shocked at the laissez faire attitude to drugs on here?

at risk of sounding like your mum and pulling a cats bum face grin

im a bit shocked. Ive seen reference to drugs and recreational drug use on here before, and while i love the diversity of mn, im always quite shocked at what seems to be a majority? view that recreational drugs are just part of life, that its ok because 'professionals' do it too, that its not the same to be seen to use cocaine at the weekend as it is to be a shoplifter or prostitute with an addiction to herioin....

is it just that no one sees the murkier side of drug use?

i suppose i see the darker side because of what i do for a living, but even before that, i would never have been tempted to try. There are the wider issues with production, trafficking, crime, gangs, and the environmental issues in production
just one such story here

my brother was a heroin addict, and i lost my sister to drugs, one way or another, i believe drug use contributed to her death. Seriously, most the crime i deal with is in some way drug related. Two weeks ago i was involved in an attempted murder over cocaine and cannabis supply.

i am not some rabid campaigner, but this is mumsnet - are most of us parents? i find it odd that people can froth about the small stuff, that people get pilloried for some really bizarre stuff on here while threads about drug use get a fairly "meh" response. (yes its a thread inspired by the coke using teachers assistant....)

why is that? genuinely interested to explore why coke use is seen as ok, and wonder what is not ok?

if its ok for the TA to use coke at the weekend, is it ok for them to smoke crack? or use heroin? doctors were mentioned on the last thread....would you undergo an operation knowing your doctor or surgeon had used coke? or smoked cannabis?

if its just part of life, where would you draw the line?
do people not realise what it takes to get that gram of coke at the pub at the weekend?

Oblomov Tue 09-Oct-12 15:55:27

Million, it is considered very bad form to drag up old Mn threads.
I wouldn't want people dragging up what I posted 8 years ago.

"ive never come across someone who could just use heroin at the weekend."
I haven't either.
But heroin is not the only drug we can discuss. People can have an occassional spliff or an occassional line of coke. If it is only very occassional, I am assuming we are not refering to them as addicted.

amillionyears Tue 09-Oct-12 16:12:10

Oblomov,I would be delighted if people read my posts on here.
That is why I do not change my name.
I want to stand by my words.

CoteDAzur Tue 09-Oct-12 16:16:05

Do your worst, amillion. Link to whatever thread you want. You will not find anything on that thread that says I lied.

Don't you understand cancer and death is worse than not telling children everything about medical procedures you authorise for their own good?

If so, at least understand that it was very low of you to (1) go dig for dirt on me on old threads, and (2) completely misrepresent the above as "admits to lying in some circumstances".

CoteDAzur Tue 09-Oct-12 16:17:27

I don't change my name, either.

And I don't go searching for anyone's old posts for dirt to use against them if they disagree with me on another thread.

OneMoreChap Tue 09-Oct-12 16:18:11

tbh, you (general you, not personal) normally get a right bollocking for dragging up thread stuff from other threads...

I think it's one of those "We don't do that sort of thing" things.

amillionyears Tue 09-Oct-12 16:39:12

I said on my post of 14.38 pm the reason for looking you up.
I mentioned the lying because if I find out that someone has lied in my life,I then always hesitate to believe what they say after that. Who knows whether they are telling the truth or not.
My DH does say I am being unrealistic about it.

CoteDAzur Tue 09-Oct-12 16:43:32

Would you believe, I don't really care what you would do if you find out someone's lied to you.

Why don't you go try to find the post where I "admit to lying in some circumstances" as you claimed?

And when you can't, come back and apologise for lying about me and telling people I "admitted to lying".

Then you can also show some sign that you understood the mistake you made in going through old threads to dig dirt on me.

amillionyears Tue 09-Oct-12 16:47:36

The post speaks for itself.
If you think that does not mean what I have posted, then I apologise.

OneMoreChap Tue 09-Oct-12 16:47:59

At one stage I thought perhaps you and OMC were living together!

I'd not noticed this. What an extraordinary thing to think.

Any particular reason, or do you just assume that people who agree about some limited issues (probably not MMR) live together?

CoteDAzur Tue 09-Oct-12 16:49:58

Going back on topic:

Re Cannabis "there is evidence that for some individuals just smoking once can lead to psychological damage"

Can you point to the part in that long document that gives this evidence? Sadly, I don't have so much time on my hands as amillion. I would be interested to learn about this evidence.

If that is just a few individuals out of millions of users, what does that mean? There are people who die with their first peanut. Does that mean peanuts should be outlawed?

OneMoreChap Tue 09-Oct-12 16:50:00

amillionyears actually, because I'm a very sad bastard interested, I went and looked. Surely the most that could be suggested was that CdA suggested to someone else they could lie isn't it? Not quite the same as you suggest?

CoteDAzur Tue 09-Oct-12 16:55:24

amillion - Quote the post which you think I "admit to lying in some circumstances", or admit yourself that you misunderstood what I said there. Unless, of course, your misrepresentation on this thread was intentional.

Just please stop insinuating that there is a post on that thread that says I have lied about vaccines or some such. Dishonestly is not a trait you want to be known by on MN. And you will, even if you have been here for only a couple of months.

Since you have said on this thread that you would be "delighted" if anyone links to your previous threads, trust me when I say that I will have no problem to linking to this one whenever we meet on a future thread. (You are welcome smile)

I really think you should acknowledge your mistake and apologise.

CoteDAzur Tue 09-Oct-12 17:01:26

"the most that could be suggested was that CdA suggested to someone else they could lie"

Yes, when we are talking about potentially saving the life of your child. If the only worry is that she might then be promiscuous, tell her it is some other vaccine.

Really, I don't think this is a shocking thing to say.

When DD is in her teens, I will tell her about other infections that have terrible outcomes (plan to start with pictures of genital warts smile). Along with the general education & morals I plan to give her until then, I don't think she will be promiscuous just because she is protected against cervical cancer.

Oblomov Tue 09-Oct-12 17:05:53

Million, I don't namechange either and have been Oblomov for nearly my whole MN'ing life.
You don't seem to have taken on board any of my comments: about digging on others, as being bad form. Even though OneMoreChap also told you the same thing.
why it would occur to you that 2 posters, who agreed, lived together, is beyond me. You have also been asked this, by another poster and have not responded.
And now you just continue to go on and on and on about this apparent Cote lie.

Please can you let this go. And just let us get back to the original topic. Because you are really starting to ruin things.

"there is evidence that for some individuals just smoking once can lead to psychological damage, "

i just read that paper and didn't find this evidence - where is it? it is bedtime and i may have missed it.

EdgarAllanPond Tue 09-Oct-12 19:36:44

"there is evidence that for some individuals just smoking once can lead to psychological damage, "

an anecdote that may help with this one - a friend of mine at school was under stress because of the exams. she stopped eating during the day, but gorged at home. She then stopped sleeping - she'd nod off and jolt awake from horrifying nightmares. Then she started seeing things, followed her Mum around the house zombie-like, incapable of completing a basic task - she just wasn't herself.

she hadn't taken drugs. she just got very wound up about the exams. Her parents were ordinary loving parents - they weren't pushy at all - the stress just came from within - she considered her value to lie in her brains, and the exams meant more to her - too much - to contemplate an average performance.

but she was 15/16 - an age where lots of people start trying drugs. If she had smoked or snorted or taken something then - wouldn't it look causally linked? particularly as she was very conscientious, and would have felt very guilty about it?

FWIW the only drug i have heard people say they felt permanently changed by is LSD.

CoteDAzur Tue 09-Oct-12 20:19:03

"the only drug i have heard people say they felt permanently changed by is LSD"

In a positive way?

EdgarAllanPond Tue 09-Oct-12 20:41:25

in a way they couldn't define. from a single usage that is. they felt changed, but couldn't say if it was desirable, or otherwise.

amillionyears Tue 09-Oct-12 22:28:20

CotDAzur 16.55pm
Your posts on the cervical cancer jab thread, from 9 July 18.23pm,3 or more posts, including "Tell you DD that the vaccine is for something else.
Even upthread on this thread, you lie to your DD about green veg.

amillionyears Tue 09-Oct-12 22:31:56

I think that is all I am going to write on this particular thread.
Everything is here for people to read. People are able to read and can make their own minds up.

CoteDAzur Wed 10-Oct-12 20:22:00

Yes, amillionyears. Go away and learn to think what is acceptable and what is not around here.

CoteDAzur Wed 10-Oct-12 20:26:51

"you lie to your DD about green veg"

In MaryZ words, your posts on this thread make you sound like a clueless moron. This one in particular.

DD is 7. I told her several years ago that eating green vegetables makes her hair beautiful like princess hair. I think she still believes it. So what?

Do you tell your DC about Santa Claus and tooth fairy? Are you then a liar?
