AIBU?

AIBU to through away every sock in the house and replace them

OnlyWantsOne · 30/09/2012 22:44

There are 4 sock wearing humans in this house.
Myself, DP, dd1 & dd2....

We are moving house on Saturday -

DP has been working away in Europe and dd3 is 5 weeks old - chaos doesn't begin to describe the house at the moment.

Odd socks. I'm FED UP of odd bloody socks.

There has been a break down in the sock care in the house since DP was in charge of laundry when the baby was born.

Odd socks galore.
Going through dd1 room I've found a haud of odd socks.

Loads of DPs socks have holes. Gah.

I want to bin every single sock & start again.

How much would it cost to save my anxiety?

£30?

Do it - I have fantasised regularly about this.

If you can, just replace with 5 pairs each, and wait until Christmas - yu'll know what to answer when people ask what you all want

Go for it :)

In our house we have a communal sock basket.
All socks go in.
If you are fussy and want a matching pair, help yourself.
If you just want cosy toes, shut your eyes and lucky dip.

I spend the saved time knitting tiny little hats to go on Innocent smoothie bottles

Do it, but don't throw them out, give to a refuge for beaten women or something.

We gave up on matching pairs (except for school and we have loads of those) a long time ago.

And when you buy new ones make sure they are all exactly the same for each person!

Do it!

I binned them all and bought plain white ones for the kids (their feet are pretty much the same size) and plain black ones for DH the bung them all in a basket in the airing cupboard. No more pairing/odd sock angst

Socks only need to match in the sense of being the same weight, material and length - ie for comfort. DH and DS have dozens of socks of the same type but variety of patterns and just grab any two.

Or take then to a clothing recycling point.

I soooo want to do this, but DH gets all funny about it. He does have a point, I suppose, that it wouldn't last 30 seconds long before they all got lost/muddled again.

Oh I did this!! is great and so far so good - I bought all the same for each DS so grey for one and black for the other, I have pink and DH has browns and greys!! it's lovely.

I replaced for under £30 -school socks supermarket, mine and DH from Next.

I've got a massive amount of socks floating around. And gave up pairing them except if we're going on holiday. But usually buy some new ones which adds to the stash. I hate waste so can't throw a perfectly good sock away as it's partner might turn up eventually. For the last year or two I've only been buying black socks but even then DH complains if the tops are different!!

As soon as you do this, you will find a lot of odd socks under beds and at the bottom of sports bags/rucksacks. I know - I have done it after throwing away all the odd socks.

Nowadays - DS has Grey ones, DH has Black ones. DD and I hardly wear them. There are also communal sports socks and trainer socks.

DD and I are about a size 4. DH and DS are about a 10-11. We have no problems with boy and girl socks.

Reject the tyranny of matching socks!
Embrace the joyful congruence of one pink and one yellow (that DS wore to school on Friday)
You have nothing to lose but hours of boredom and frustration :)

Don't be so hung up on them matching. I bin socks that have holes in but I definitely don't bin the other one in the pair - I just wear it with any other odd one that comes alng. If you wear trousere nobody will know

Oh, I'd love to do this but it would cost more than £30 to replace DH's socks. He has a thing about having good socks.

Might do it for me and the kids.

Oooo, I smell liberation! But it would only work if all family members respected their 'sock allocation' and I doubt mine would...

I am currently sitting here in one grey striped knee-high sock and one purple. I can't remember the last time I wore socks that matched. I tried buying all black, but the DSes just pinched them all. I tried buying pink, but they still pinched them all (and I regretted those feminist lectures in infancy: "No of course pink isn't a girl's colour; it's just a colour, a pretty colour" Grin ) Nowadays I keep my socks locked - I kid you not - to prevent kidnap! Hmm

YANBU. I did this, it was great. We're getting in a mess again now, so I might do it again, although I don't mind wearing odd ones [whacky].

yAnbu. I dream of doing this, and colour coding our socks so that it wont matter if they are odd.

Do it, do it now!!

Tescos will be having some 20% off clothes days soon - replace then.

I am another who buys all the same for DH and DS but I have nice patterned ones.

I have terrible OCD about matching socks, so I totally agree with you on throwing them away.

Startailoforangeandgold · 30/09/2012 23:12

I want to bin all plain white and all plain black socks!

I have 4 or 5 slightly different types of black socks and 100's of slightly different lengths and patterns of school white socks. They drive me mental.

DH and DD1 now have black work and school socks with coloured bits. Bliss they may wait a wash or two to find their pairs, but at least they are quick and easy to pair. No irate DDs telling me that I've paired different sizes, lengths or vaguely different styles.

It sounds like a plan and a drop in the financial ocean for moving house.

But please don't give the old ones to a refuge for 'beaten women' Confused
