AIBU to think customers need to learn some manners?

customers are so rude these days

there was a time when they would say please and thank you

now they click their fingers or shout oi you

they are also completely entitled and expect you to stop serving the person you are with to serve them

they never believe anything you say -if they ask you if you have any more in the back and you say no, they don't believe you, they seem to think that shops have huge quantities of stock in the back as their stock holiding is so high (as obviously this desn't require the company to be cash rich or anything)

they talk on their mobile phones while you are trying to serve them

if you offer them a bag you are wrong for asking as it will murder the environment
if you don't ask them if they want a bag then you are wrong because they don't want to be acused of shoplifting

and they complain that we don't have enough staff -because we obvioulsy enjoy working on half the hours we had 5 years ago -it really makes our day!

oh and I'm not an idiot, I am educated to degree level, and I do much much more than just stand on a till so please don't speak to me like you are something you have just stepped in

Well to be fair you're not coming across as being that intelligent for tarring almost everyone in the country with the same brush.

You might want to work on learning to use the words some customers.

I'm with you. I'm a shop manager, also degree educated but people generally assume I'm stupid because I work in retail. Its also assumed that all I do is open the doors and work on a till. No point worrying about it though, service industry staff are not important you know

Haha exactly Worra. I do see what the OP means about some customers though, I used to hate the whole 'Customer is always right' training. No, sometimes the customer is just being a bellend and needs to be treated as such!

Oh God so are SO RIGHT!!!

DH and I have a restaurant, and the way we are spoken to sometimes would take your breath away.

I get extremely pissed off about it, whereas DH is more circumspect.

It ranges from "What can I get you?" "Beer" - no please or thankyou

to customers clicking their fingers and waving an empty glass at me across the restaurant. We've also been patronised, sworn at and had people leave without paying.

You say they used to be polite? I worked in retail over 20 years ago. The only thing they do now that they didn't do then was speak on their mobile phones.

Nothing changes. People are always rude. Ignore it and do your job.

And im just going by some of the threads i've read on here, you know, the one along the lines of "the till girl had the audacity to smile at me, call me ma'am and ask me how my day was, AIBU to tell her to mhofb?" (And i understood that you meant some, i just assume it's common sense that you don't mean all customers, but you know, some people need it spelt out for them :))

I am practically perfect in every way when it comes to shop workers. I smile, I thank them, I understand that they cannot know my every wish simply by being in the vicinity.

Unless of course they shove my trolley to one side and swear because I dared to be picking apples when they wanted to refill the apple section. Then I report them to customer services, if I have PMT.

This is why I shop online.

I'd hate for someone to be offended because my phone goes off mid-transaction and I see my work/child's school/elderly grandparent as more important than small talking with someone.

I'd also be upset if I offended someone because I'm having a rough day/am in a hurry/not feeling well and aren't as bright and smiley as I should be.

I'm also sad to know that I'm offending people by not asking about their qualifications! I assumed that it was none of my business.

Shopping online also solves the 'bag dilema'.....!

Well - perhaps I skew the curve, because I smile at shop assistants, make conversation with them, make eye contact with them, and say please and thank-you. My kids and dh do the same, as does my mum, my dsis, dmil ..... I could go on.

OP - being serious now, it makes a much more valid point if you talk about some customers being rude (as others have done on this thread). I do realise that one rude customer is probably far more memorable than ten nice ones, but it isn't nice to ignore the efforts of those of us who are polite and pleasant to shop assistants.

One of my colleagues witnessed a worker in a shoe shop being shouted at by a customer who had apparently bought the shoes a week earlier, they had been reduced the day before and the woman now wanted them at the reduced price. She was wearing them at the time. She was having such a go at this girl, who wasn't going to do it. Couldn't do it.

i agree, SOME customers are total twat! but then some of my customers are the most lovely people ever and have weedled their way into being friends now!

unfortunatly where i work i have a HUGE numer of nasty, hot tempered, abusive and violent customers. i have been threated, sworn at, someone threaten to wait till i finish and rape me!

can not wait to get pregnant so i can leave!!!!

That's not rude.

Some random rude who squawks into their phone the whole entire transaction is out of order and will get moaned about once they leave and other customers are out of earshot.

I can't stand people being rude and I'll defend shop keepers (there's an ol' fashioned word ) if I hear someone being rude to them having worked in a shop myself.

But it does sound a bit minefieldy. And asking for a bag now is a truly terrifing experience....!
