I took over a team a few months back and the structure has a couple of supervisors in it. One of the supervisors super supportive and helping me settle, the other not at all and I would go as far as to say he is bloody undermining - just very difficult to prove. The team has problems with cliques and bad atmosphere and I spoke to the unsupportive supervisor last week in preparation for his appraisal and discussed how he could be more inclusive to ensure that the two teams integrate more.

This week, he has organised a social gathering for his team only and left out the others and there is one holy atmosphere in the office. He also has not attended to reasonable work requests and I have done a 360 feedback for him and there is loads of negative feedback for him.

I know I'm a good manager with a flexible approach so this isn't an AIBU question but I need to manage him out don't I?

Does your company have a values or behavioural framework that you can reference to structure discussions?

If his attitude doesn't improve, then yes, he has to go. Poor attitude is a choice and if he doesn't want to work in line with your leadership approach he chooses to go.

Well if it isnt an AIBU question, it doesnt really belong here. I do believe there is a section for employment though. :)

Absolutely it does Hermione. He is working against every value and principal that we have developed over a very long time. He was promoted above his capability level before I took over and what makes matters worse is the old manager is still lurking around bolstering his bloody ego. It's a shame, he's bright and good at the operational side of his job. I thought I had started to turn him until this week and then the behaviour is in direct contravention to my coaching discussion about him being more inclusive.

Point taken Squeaky - can I rename this, is he being unreasonable then? :-)

If you think it's him that has an especially negative effect on the office dynamic, and you think you can manage him out, then go for it.
