to not expect a lecture at the checkout?

Popped into local co op last night for some beer for DH (he had been fitting new kitchen, bless him) and some Pepsi max for me.

Chap in front of me at checkout. Was buying a few items including single can of coke. It got stuck and didn't get rung through with his other shopping, so I pointed it out. Checkout lady apologised and said she thought it was mine, and I said "Oh no, I can't have sugar, it's bad for me!".

Pertinent fact - I am diabetic.

Chap in front points at my Pepsi max and starts RANTING at me that it contains aspartame, a "dangerous neurotoxin, that stuff will KILL YOU, you are stupid to think its better for you than sugar just because it has no calories, you should educate yourself, read a book once in a while!".

Er, fuck off grasshopper? I know aspartame is contentious, but really, what business is it of his??

slartybartfast Sun 23-Sep-12 12:52:27

what a wanker. perhaps he thought you were criticising him with the sugar?

WelshMaenad Sun 23-Sep-12 12:53:01

He probably thought you were lecturing him. Albeit more succinctly.

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts Sun 23-Sep-12 12:56:04

Yabu.. What business is it of theirs that you can't have sugar? You provided too much info. You should have said..."No, it's not mine." and left it at that.

puds11 Sun 23-Sep-12 12:57:27

Did you tell him you were diabetic? I would have just to shame him.

Iamsparklyknickers Sun 23-Sep-12 12:57:38

I think slartybartfast raises a good point actually, unless you actually mentioned the fact you're diabetic, as far as the man was aware, you were just judging his choice of drink.

Therefore, YANBU to not want to be lectured, but you did start it, even unintentionally.

OHforDUCKScake Sun 23-Sep-12 12:57:43

I think he thought you were criticising him tbh.

WelshMaenad Sun 23-Sep-12 13:01:39

Really? I was just trying to be chatty. Shan't bother in future!

MrSunshine Sun 23-Sep-12 13:02:25

reg coke does not contain any aspartame.

TheSitChewAceChien Sun 23-Sep-12 13:02:44

Tbh, if I was the coke can man (not that I would be, I'm far too healthy and lovely* wink) I'd think you were having a dig.

*I'm not really.

WofflingOn Sun 23-Sep-12 13:06:37

You're response was a bit thoughtless, but that is the way of casual conversations.
He probably thought you were having a go at him.
How would you have felt if he'd looked you up and down and said 'I can see why you avoid sugar' ?

peanutMD Sun 23-Sep-12 13:06:39

YABU a simple no would have done.

I would have thought you were criticizing me.

WofflingOn Sun 23-Sep-12 13:07:21

Oops, bad editing on my part.
'Your response'

wannabedomesticgoddess Sun 23-Sep-12 13:07:40

Yeah actually I think its just diet coke. Silly me.

Though drinking coke hardly gives him the right to lecture on the benefits of a healthy diet.

wherearemyGOLDsocks Sun 23-Sep-12 13:08:07

You see trying to be chatty was your first mistake. I sometimes try it too, but often just get looked at like I'm a loon.

Iamsparklyknickers Sun 23-Sep-12 13:11:55

Nothing wrong with been chatty, we all forget that people don't know automatically everything about us or need reminding/informing where we're coming from.

FranSanDisco Sun 23-Sep-12 13:11:56

I think he thought you were lecturing him. A simple 'no' to the cashier's question was enough really.
