There is a boy (10) in dd's class who has major low self esteem issues, is very shy and will barely talk in class. DD is his only friend.

Anyway he struggles with his writing and it is quite hard to read apparently. Now it seems that the teacher keeps telling him off for his messy writing and now today the teacher held up his book and ridiculed his writing, showing all of the class at the same time

DD said she felt like defending him. I find this hard to believe and feel it is way out of order.

If it is true, then that is vile.

If it's true it is disgusting and I would mention it to his mother so she can get to the bottom of what is going on. It should never happen, but sadly sometimes it does, the only way to stop it is to make sure that enough noise about it is made.

I think you need to find out who his parents are and let them know Sad

I've had to complain to ds2's (Year 3) teacher after school this afternoon because he's told us he's frightened of her (she's very strict and shouts) and it's stopping his brain from working (his words) - he can't concentrate due to the tension.

Please try and find out who the parents are and tell them. This poor child needs support, not ridicule.

I feel that DD is not exaggerating on this one because I could see how angry she was when she was talking about it

She really has no need to make a story up about another child does she! On that basis I would be inclined to believe what she says.

The teacher sounds awful :(

I have only heard brill reports about teacher and she does seem really nice, but looks can be deceiving.

How old is your DD 99? Not suggesting she is lying, but children can exaggerate.

I heard a similar story from another child of about the same age - the mum was all fired up and contacted me to see what I thought, my DD in the same class had not noticed anything, and when the other mum went back to her child it turned out that the thing hadn't actually happened, but the child was worried that it might happen.

So even reliable children can communicate things wrongly. If this has happened though it is obviously unacceptable, but it is so odd I would be surprised if any teacher would think they could get away with something like that, though that probably doesn't mean that it couldn't have happened.

I would still mention it to the other mother so she can check it out. If the child is that shy then they may not mention it at home and the problem might escalate. My own son was repeatedly called an idiot, stupid and too dumb to be worth helping by a teacher and I only found out because other children were going home and telling their parents what was going on. he never said a word.
