AIBU?

For grounding my daughter for reading a book on how to get famous???

A couple of days ago I oerheard my 16 year old daughter talking about ways to make the perfect sex tape with her best friend. I interupted the conversation and found that they were reading a book that teaches the many ways of becoming famous (including making and leaking a sex tape!!)

I grounded her but she feels I'm overreacting. Am I?

Any advice will help ;-)

Erm....I don't think grounding a 16 year old is useful.

Better to educate her on why pornography is bad..why not pop over to the feminist boards for advice on some reading matter for her?

YABU

It's a book?!

Grounding her is daft, sorry.

What is required is a decent library to combat the shite she's reading and a discussion about whether she really thinks thats a great idea. Maybe she read it and thought YAMGWTF! and discussed it with her friend, maybe they even joked about it... there are women up and down the country who've read that dreadful Grey Triology that are talking about cable ties, even if they loathed the book!

I DO feel you're over reacting in your punishment of your DD. I don't feel you're over reacting in your shock.

Time for chats, not punishment. If you punish, she'll think you disaprove of discussion. Let her read that book (too late!) ask her what she feels about it.

YABU and YANBU.

What good will "grounding" do? Far better to talk to her about it and advise her there are more important things in life than being famous.

Yes, I think that's an overreaction.

Far better to discuss why it's inappropriate, and why that industry is bad IMO.

Tell her not to be a knob. That should sort it.

yabu to ground her and by listening in on her conversation

No grounding. Talk to her, engage with her.

Surely you've done a good enough job raising her for this just to be an intellectual exercise and not something she's seriously considering?

Report
PrincessOfChina · 20/09/2012 20:54

Sorry, that sounds flippant but I doubt she actually thinks this is a good idea. I would unground her and tell her to stop being an idiot and start showing that she deserves your trust.

I'm not sure what you're grounding her for? A conversation with her friend or reading a book you don't approve of?

YANBU to be horrified but you have scored an own goal by grounding her. Rather explain to her, in an open discussin why A) being famous for being famous is hardly something to aspire to and B) why porn (even "soft" porn) is really bad. If you react by grounding and punishing her you are paving the way for her to be secretive and not feel she can come to you when she needs advice on something of a sensitive nature.

THAT is all :)

Agree with everyone else, YANBU to be horrified, but I don't think grounding her is the answer.

I think you're right to ground her, if she's going to become famous knowing how to read isn't going to help, she needs to start slapping on the fake tan and hanging out where footballers will find her.

YABU. It's a book. Educate her rather than grounding her.

Fame at any price seems to be the goal of so many young people these days. It's so sad.

OP does she understand the difference between famous and infamous ??Between the A List, where people are usually famous and respected because they are really really good at something, and the B/C/D/Z list full of losers who will do anything to be gossiped about and are looked down upon?

Grounding her isn't going to fix it. Discussing the reality of fame, and how you can't just create it, is a better track.

A sex tape will only work if one party has some degree of fame already. Not only is she reading a stupid book, it is also one that gives bad advice.

Maybe give her an application form for the next series of TOWIE?
